Makino sighed staying seated on the couch. "I am sorry Haku. I know you don't want to hear this, but it sounds like you're trying too hard to be something you will never be. Your not your Ojiisan and I am sorry to say." She paused knowing what she was about to say was going to upset him, but he had to stop trying to be something he was not.
"You never will be."

Haku clenched his teeth together. He knew that he was never going to be his grandfather. No one could be him. But one thing. Just one thing he prayed for and reality turned out to be the exact opposite. He couldn't even tell her because he knew she would just think he was being ridiculous. It was a stupid thing to be upset about, but for some reason he couldn't shake, it was so vastly important to him.
Maybe it was because he felt like it went against his nature, or the nature he thought he had. Or maybe something changed. A person's soul could change, right? Maybe his grandfather's flame finally burning out changed him. If that was true, then he had even more reason to hate Quincies. His shoulders trembled and the floor beneath his feet began to frost over as his reiatsu spilled out. Whisps of frost wafted off of the floor where the ice slowly began to crawl out in a circular pattern.
"I know that I'll never be him. No one ever could. I just wanted... I wanted to carry on his legacy. I wanted something that would connect me to him besides something as hollow as a name. But that's just not possible." He turned and gave Makino a stern look. "I hope you find what you're looking for in the Academy."

Makino quickly went to stand when she saw the ice forming on the floor, she panicked and swiftly pulled her feet off the floor. If his powers were anything like some she had heard of that ice would not only cover the floor but anything in its path.
"HAKU! STOP!" She cried out to him as the ice went under the table and started up the table leg, bringing it even closer to the couch where she was trapped.

Haku looked down at the ice covering everything in his vicinity. When he began to panic as the ice crawled towards Makino, the ice began to spread quicker. He reached out to grab her and pull her off the couch but as he reached for her his hands began to frost over as well. He yanked his hands back and stepped away from the couch, putting a good five feet between them. He closed his eyes and placed his hands on his head.
"Stop! Just stop! Leave me the hell alone!" He tried to direct his voice inwards. He pulled his reiatsu in as close to his core as he could. "All you do is cause me trouble!"

Seeing his hand frost over and him quickly drawing it back, Makino's heart pounded in her chest. She looked quickly around the room for some way to escape the couch and not touch the floor or anything else the ice was forming on or already taken over. There was nothing, nothing at all for her to use her abilities and talents to free her from her trap.
She sighed getting annoyed at herself. "Why couldn't his powers be flying objects or shadows. Something my talents could be useful with."
Looking to the floor once again the ice was only a few centimeters away and it would be forming under the couch. "Haku," she spoke above a normal tone, but calmly so he would hear her, but not over react and become more upset. "Calm down, you have to calm yourself, or you're going to turn your best friend into a popsicle. Breath. Haku, please." She begged watching the ice creep under the couch.

Haku took several deep breaths, lowering his hands but keeping his eyes closed. He didn't want to hurt Makino. Creating the ice was the easy part. Sometimes it would form without him even thinking about it. When he brushed his hair or made a cup of tea or went to run a bath. Sometimes when he was really upset all it would take was for him to walk and he was leaving behind icy footprints. He hated it. He just wanted to be rid of the damn thing.
But he couldn't think about that now or the ice would get worse. He tried to calm himself. He thought about his grandfather teaching him to meditate and control his emotions. Soon the shaking stopped and when he opened his eyes the ice covering the floor was starting to crack. Soon the ice cracked completely and turned to dust. He looked down at his hands. The ice was gone but was replaced with red, blotchy patches like he had been burned.
He looked up at Makino. "Sorry... Sorry I... I didn't..."

Makino sighed her head dropped and she fell to her knees on the couch. When she looked up at Haku he was looking at his hands. "Haku," she said hurriedly as she stood up off the couch and went quickly to him.
She took his wrists in her hands and turned them to take a better look. "They're burnt," she looked up at him from his hands. "From your ice. Your ice is so cold"--a wide smile crossed her lips as she looked back to his hands--"the ice burns." She shook her head bringing her back to reality. "We need to get some medicine on them."

Haku could hardly comprehend what she was saying. He knew a Soul Reaper's own powers could harm them, especially elemental wielders. He just couldn't comprehend the extent to which his own powers had harmed him.
"I'm... I'm fine. Really. This happened before." He pulled his hands away from her, shaking his head. "You shouldn't touch me. It's not safe."

Makino's hands fell to her side as she looked on at Haku. "You would never hurt me, and if you did it would be on accident."
"Accident or not. I could hurt you." Haku repeated.
"So what? Are you telling me we can't be friends anymore because you're afraid you're going to freeze me?" Her arms crossed under her breasts as she gave him an inquiring and confused look. "Because if that is what you're saying. Tough! You're apparently struggling with these powers. Do you really think I will turn my back on a friend in need?

"That's not what I meant! Of course I still want to be friends!" Haku shook his head at her. "But this thing hates me. And I can't say I'm too fond of it either!"
He let out a heavy sigh, letting his hands fall to his sides. They were stiff and numb in some places and stung and tingled in others. "I wish I'd never used jinzen that day... If I had just left well enough alone, none of this would have happened."

Makino stepped back from him as she looked pointedly into his eyes. "So that was your zanpakuto powers?"
Haku scowled, lifting his hands and gently rubbing the raw, blotchy skin. "Phoenixes are supposed to be red and covered in fire. So you'd think a white phoenix would have white fire, right? White fire. The hottest of all flames." He scoffed, his eyebrows pulling together. "An ice element phoenix... It's unnatural. It's like a fish breathing air."
"But that is like super cool," Makino giggled as her hands came together in front of her. "Oh I am sure she or he, is beautiful, and what's wrong with ice so cold it burns. The frozen flame." She giggled again. "I can't wait to see what my zanpakuto powers are."

Haku let out a heavy sigh and turned to flop down on the couch once more. "I knew you wouldn't get it. I knew if I told you about my zanpakuto you would just get all giddy and excited and be like"--Haku put on a fake smile and waved his hands around enthusiastically--"'but Haku, it doesn't matter what element your sword is! It's still cool! No pun intended!'"
Makino stomped up to him with a displeased look on her face and punched him in the arm--hard enough he leaned over some on the couch--"don't make fun of me. I get what your saying. You wanted it to be actual fire. So you would have something of your Ojiisan's."
Haku hunched his shoulders, grabbing his arm where she punched him. "I dreamt about it my whole damn life and now that the moment has arrived it's nothing like what I imagined." He turned his head away from her. "Zanpakuto abilities can be inherited. Sometimes relatives can have very similar abilities. I thought that... I thought that if my zanpakuto was a fire type it would make me feel less like an imposter. And that the people who treat me like I'm some freeloader or that I'm leeching off of my grandfather's success would shut up. If I had a fire type, maybe those who saw me as a burden on my grandfather would see things differently."

"By the Gods," Makino rolled her eyes, her hands going to her hips, "Are you kidding me? Are you really worried what others think about you? I thought Kouen and Shirou taught us better than that, or well at least you. I got it, but apparently you did not."
"Yeah, yeah." He combed his fingers through his hair. "It don't matter what others think about you. The only ones that matter are family and true friends." He looked up at Makino with narrowed eyes. "Well that is easier said than done."
"Yamamoto-sama did not see you as a burden or a freeloader. If that is what he thought of you he would have never brought you home that day he found you. He would have left you there to die. He loved you very much and I guarantee if your Ojiisan heard any of those whispers, he would have warmed their souls to the core."

Haku tried to hold in a smile but it broke free and he laughed at the image of his grandfather releasing Ryujinjakka against anyone that spoke ill of him. "Yeah, you're right."
He gave a shrug. "But still. Ojiisan's zanpakuto was the strongest fire type because of the passion he had for his duty of protecting the realms. Some may have thought he was cruel and uncaring, but he was warm and kind. He never gave up, not even in his final moments. So for me to have a zanpakuto like this..." He looked at his hands once again. "What does that say about me? I'd like to think I'm at least a little like he was... So why? Why did my powers turn out like this?"

Makino gently took his hands in hers and looked into his eyes. "You are like him. You're strong, caring, warm, and kind. He instilled all of those things"--she released one of his hands as that hand rested to his chest over his heart--"in here, and it shows every day. So stop thinking you're nothing like him. Because you're more like him than you believe." Haku gave Makino a small smile. "Thanks." He stood up once more. "We should practice together sometime. You know, without the frostbite." He waved his hands at her. Makino leaned back from him slightly and gave him a raised brow look. "You might need that one your side. If you remember last time, I kick your butt all over the dojo, and that was without swords." She gave him a cocky grin as it was his turn to punch her. "Oooouch," she whined rubbing her arm.
The two then chuckled softly, "Come on, we need to get your hands taken care of." Haku nodded as they made their way out of the living room to go find some medicine for his hands.~END RP~ "Dusting Off the Cobwebs":
