Koi nodded. Then told the story of how she captured the boy. She told of the cage she kept him, the operations she performed. And, then she grew quiet.
“I went in to bring him food and he was outside of the cage. He was already covered in bone. But, it looked different. It wasn’t…” Koi began to tremble slightly, calming only as Isao placed a hand on her leg.
“The bone…It changed…Then, he attacked.” Koi shook her head. “It was weird…It was like he…”
“He what?”
“I’d attack…Then…The same attack wouldn’t work again.”

“So, he learned from your attacks and could dodge them.” Isao shrugged. “It happens in a fight.” He gently squeezed her leg and smiled. “It happens to all of us.”
Koi shook her head. “No…He wasn’t dodging them. They just wouldn’t work anymore.”
“That doesn’t make any sense, Koi.”
“No shit!”
“Koi!” Isao moved a bit closer. “Come on, now. I’m sorry, alright.” Sighing as he rubbed his brow, Isao looked at Koi. “Okay, how did he get your arm?”

Koi went quiet for a moment then took a deep breath. “He speared me with the bones around his hand.” She brought her hand to the opposite shoulder. She had the same scar on both shoulders. “Then…He just started…biting.” Koi’s voice lowered to almost a whisper. “I don’t…remember…”
Isao didn’t press the issue, seeing his wife grow flush with shame. “It’s alright, Koi.”
“Is it?” she whispered. “It doesn’t feel alright…”

Isao grabbed Koi’s arm and pulled her into him. He kissed the top of her head. “I am so sorry, Koi. I’m so sorry this happened to you.” He wrapped his arms around her and held her as tightly as he could.
“We’ll need to talk about what you were doing to him. But, we’ll deal with that later. For now…”
“Isao…”
“Yeah?”
“This hurts…”
“Oh!” Isao let go of Koi and gently pushed her away. “Sorry!”

“I know you don’t want to hear it, but I was serious.” Koi rubbed her injured arm. “I don’t need you to hang around to take care of me.”
“Then, how about,” Isao smiled as he looked at his wife. “Tough shit, Koi. I am your husband. And, whether you like it or not, I am going to take care of you.” He shrugged. “It might be as it’s always been, from a distance. But, I will always take care of you.”
“Fine.” grunted Koi. “Just don’t be gross about it.” Watching as Isao got up and walked over to his own bed, Koi grunted. “So?”
“So?”
Koi rolled her eyes. “Nothing.”

“Nothing?” questioned Isao. This is the most she’s talked to him in ages. And, she clearly wanted to continue their conversation. But, he was annoyed. He didn’t show it, but he was very annoyed.
Isao walked over and sat on the edge of his own bed. “What’s on your mind, Koi?”“Nothing.” she grunted as she sat back in her bed. Isao nodded. “Alright.” She wanted him to keep asking what was wrong. He should continue with this conversation. But, he didn’t want to. So he stood up and walked to the end of his bed and grabbed his robe. “Where are you going?”“For a walk.” Isao shuffled his way toward the door. He stopped at the door and glanced over his shoulder. “Koi…Are you planning on doing this again? Going after the boy, I mean?”
Koi didn’t answer. He knew her silence was a yes. Isao sighed, pushed the door open and left.END RP “First Steps”
