Yumiko’s frown deepened and took a cautious step forwards. Then stopped as a wave of hurt shot through her. She let her hands fall to her sides. “This is a dream, Vale, so say what you would never tell me during our years together. There’s no repercussions here. Just ripples of what has happened."

"This isn't a dream, Yumiko. And, there will always be repercussions. I've lost you. I know. And, I'm not asking you to come back to me. I'm just asking for you to help me, right now." Vale grunted, shaking his head. He slammed his head against the marble wall in frustration.
"I can't go to Aizen like this. I don't know what Alister did. Or took. He said he was taking everything." His head hit the wall again. "If you don't believe me, you can go. But, I don't want you to..."
The noble didn't let the silence linger long. "How do you want me to help you?"
"I don't know!" he shouted, causing Yumiko to take a step back. "I don't know..."

Yumiko wrapped a hand around her arm. "You're asking me something I can do little about. Even in my dreams here, you don't tell me enough for to help you. Why would this be any different?"
"I told you that this isn't a dream, Yumiko!"
Yumiko looked to the side. The words didn't reassure her, only reinforced the trapped sensation. "If it's not a dream, then tell me why Alister would leave you now? After you finally became what he wanted. You embraced your darkness. You launched your attack on Soul Society even..."

"He said I was a puppet." Shaking his head, Vale spoke as if the words he spoke pained him. "He said I was...a failed experiment. And, that he was done with me." Vale rose slowly from the floor, his hands out in front of him.
"I'm not going to hurt you. You have my word." Vale walked over to the edge of the bed and sat down, his back to Yumiko. "You don't want to help me, so go."

Tears formed in her eyes despite it all. "Damn it, Vale!" She walked over to the window, staring at the moon, but tears still burned down her cheeks. "Just do what you want. Even if I wanted to help you, why should I try? You never wanted help before. You wanted me to follow you so you could stay safe."

Vale said nothing, as he sat on the bed's edge. He longed to reach out to her. To wipe away her tears. To comfort her instead of her comforting him. But, he knew better. She wouldn't allow him to get close enough to do so.
So, Vale laid on the bed and rolled onto his side so that his back was to Yumiko. His grey eyes focused on the slightly open bedroom door, as he let the silence of the room wash over him.

Yumiko took a deep, shuddering breath, and stepped back from the window. "Why is it so beautiful out there when Las Noches poisons all inside its walls?" she whispered. She turned around to look at Vale, curled on the bed. She touched his shoulder. "If this were real, would I approach you? After everything? But because of everything, too? If I had never touched you, would you be happy even lost to the darkness?"

Vale reached for her hand, only letting his fingertips grace the hand resting on his shoulder. He said nothing as he closed his eyes. His body relaxed as Yumiko continued to question the current reality.
"If this is a dream..." he whispered. "Don't let it end..."

More tears dropped onto his shoulder at those words. Shaking, Yumiko ran her free hand over her eyes. "Why won't I stop crying? I can't let you hurt me anymore, but when the dreams are soft ones like this.... I almost want to. Because of warmth of so many years beside you." She turned away. "But it's just poison, like that garden, like Aizen's touches, it will all end. Nothing is real here!"

Vale turned over to his other side, wrapping his arms around Yumiko and curling into her. "This isn't a dream, Yumiko. This is real. My love for you is real. You're not dreaming." Vale buried his face in her side, not wanting to let go even as she moved in his grasp.
"I'm sorry..."

Trembling but not willing to break the connection yet, Yumiko's voice stung her throat as she spoke. “Sorry for what?” she muttered, tone thick with tears. “For hurting me? For not telling me how hard it was? For lying? For never telling me the full truth even as I confided in you about everything? Damn it, Vale, why! If this isn’t a dream, why am I back here?” She bowed her head, rubbing against the pain building in her temples.

"Roses and thorns grow on the same tree, love," mumbled Vale. "I'm sorry for not loving and nurturing you as I should have." Vale snuggled deeper into Yumiko, praying she wouldn't let go. "I brought you here when I went to Karakura. Before Alister left me. I don't regret it."
Vale loosened his hold on Yumiko, just enough to look up at her. "I don't regret getting to hold you again." Vale lifted a hand and wiped away her tears. "Look at me...please." Vale turned her head gently. "I just want you to stay with me for a while. Please..."

Yumiko started to reply but her voice failed, even as she turned into his gentle hand. “Vale… I….” She paused, trapped in the warm, tingling sensations he was stirring up in her through his apologies, in the surreal effect of it all. She looked into his grey eyes. “I wish I had taken Alister’s bargain to keep you away from the dark, that or I had never waken from the dream Aizen’s darkness constructed for me. And I’m sorry.” She leaned down, only needing a small urge and kissed him, melting against him, tears running freely down her neck.
And then she pushed him away, standing quickly. “Damn it, you told me this wasn’t a dream. I can’t - I can’t do this!” She shunpo’ed to the bedroom doorway. And stopped.

"What bargain?" Vale turned slowly on the bed. "I thought the one to save me was the only one." Rising from the bed, Vale walked over to Yumiko still standing in the doorway. He took her hand, lacing his fingers with hers.
"Look, I really don't want to talk about what we should have done differently. Or, what should have happened. Or, even how bad I am for you."
Yumiko pulled her hand from Vale's. "Then, what do you want to talk about?"
Vale shook his head. "I don't want to talk about anything."
Yumiko leaned on the doorway, not looking his way. "What do you want then?"
"You." Vale stated bluntly. "I just want you."

Yumiko closed her eyes, letting the structure of the door support her as she spoke. “And after that, what then?” She turned around, grasping the doorframe behind her. “In seven years, when Aizen is destined to come back and try to control all the Realms, what am I supposed to do then? If I fight back, you’ll hurt me as you have done before. And..." She took a breath, trying to calm the painful racing of her heart, and then started speaking faster, desperate to get it out. "I have lived a life of existence for too long, Vale. I won’t do it again! Not even for you! I won’t just wait for the darkness to end.”
