Yoruichi halted where the boys were standing, her hand going to Sojiro's shoulder waiting for Vale to show. "It seems someone is looking for you."
The boy nodded, "Mhm," he hummed with a slight nod. "I heard him call mine and Kadaj's name."
"I won't let him take either of you from your mother." Yoruichi informed him.
Sojiro shook his head, "Vale won't take us from mom. If anything he wants to get us to safety and out of this tunnel."
Before Yoruichi could answer him Vale shunpo'ed up behind her.

Vale narrowed his eyes at the woman, before turning and facing Sojiro. "Hey kid." Vale smiled, resting his hand to the top of head. "Mom is worried about you and this little one." He smiled as he looked down at Kadaj.
"I'm going to take them, now." Vale looked to Yoruichi. "Thank you for looking after them."

Yoruichi's eyes widened slightly. "You have Kita? Why? Tessai told me that Kisuke hid her away so she would not be so easy to find if Aizen or one of his henchmen came looking for her."
"Loki came...She's safe now." Vale sighed. "You are welcome to come with us."
Yoruichi looked at the ones in the tunnel then back to Vale as her head shook. "No. I can't do that they need me here. So many of us have been lost in this war and a lot of the strongest were taken to Las Noches. I can't abandoned them. Even if it is just for a few hours."
She looked to Sojiro and smiled. "I am sure you want to go so you can see your mother?"
Sojiro nodded with a wide, bright smile as Yoruichi patted his shoulder then looked back to Vale. "They're all yours. Tell Kita I will see her soon I am sure Kisuke told her where we were going."

"Is Mother alright, Vale?" questioned Sojiro, as he watched Vale turned to head back down the tunnel. "Loki did a number on her." Vale admitted. "And, without Sumi, it may take her awhile to heal." "Without Sumi?" Sojiro ran up behind Vale and grabbed his shoulder, turning him around. "What do you mean Mother doesn't have Sumi anymore? What did you do?""I didn't do anything!" shouted Vale. Everyone turned to face him, as he sighed. He turned to face the boy and his brother. "Everything that his happening is because Sumi interfered...again. The Soul King warned her quite awhile ago, it seems. She violated the terms set for she and Alister. So, they were taking from us." "And, you left her alone? She doesn't have any power without the goddess.""The Soul King allowed her to keep her healing power and her shield. She is fine. But, I don't want to leave her alone too long. Let's go." Moved

Bleach Unrated: REBOOTEDCurrent Arc: The ChaosEpisode 523 "Time Together": (continued) It didn't take long for Rukia and Renji to arrive at Inuzuri. Hanging Dog District was as pleasant as she remembered, with dirty, dark alleys from which the occupants in ratty kimonos gave the visitors suspicious looks. In the open, people with angry expressions watched them, too. Rukia stood still for a moment, taking it all in, then walked on. Trying to look intimidating. But then, a bunch of kids ran past the two of them. Rukia dodged to the side as one tried to run into Renji. She laughed, eyes softening again. "This brings back memories." She checked for her money bag.

Renji smirked and pulled out both his and Rukia's money bag. "Yeah but we're smarter now. And stronger." He handed Rukia her money bag and stuffed his into a safer place in his shihakusho. "Let's keep a tight hold on our wallets. We may have changed, but this place hasn't."
They walked through the district, pointing out familiar places and shops as they tried to find a decent place to eat where they wouldn't throw them out or rob them blind. After they had been walking for a while, Renji said, "How about that dumpling place over off the main street? If it's still there. They were always decent."

Rukia nodded. "That's a good idea. It's getting late in the day and I've only had breakfast." She looked up at her tall boyfriend. "I should have stolen some of your ramen before we left."
Renji plucked her in the forehead. "You should have asked." Before she could complain, he grabbed her hand again. "Come on, let's get you fed, and then we can eat by the river."
"Careful, Renji," Rukia smirked. "You're starting to sound romantic. Say much more and you'll hurt yourself."
Renji elbowed her. "Hey! I can be romantic!"
Rukia grinned, eyes twinkling in wicked mischief at the flush over his nose and cheeks. "Yes, you can. Just don't trip on a kid while looking at me."

"Hey! I can walk and look at you and pay attention at the same ti--"
Just as he spoke, a child about half the size of Rukia came zooming past him with no regard for whether or not he bumped into someone. Renji nearly tripped over a rock trying to halt himself abruptly so he didn't bowl the child over. His arm flailed as he tried to regain his balance. He scowled as Rukia laughed at him.
"Ok fine... I'll shut up," he huffed.
They walked around a bit more before arriving at the dumpling shop he mentioned. Rather than a shop, it was more of an izakaya with limited outdoor seating and short noren curtains. Renji stuck his head through the noren and tapped on the bell on the counter, alerting the cook. "Hey, Naba-san! Could we get an order of chicken gyoza, some seafood soup dumplings, and four pork belly buns?"
The scruffy old man with a blue bandana around his head and wearing a matching apron turned around and gave them a dead eyed-stare. He had a serious five-o-clock shadow and was chewing on a toothpick. He grunted at them, though a flash of recognition glinted in his eyes.
"Oh, it's you two. Finally decided you weren't too good to show your faces around here."
Renji rolled his eyes at the old man. "You're welcome for working so hard to keep Soul Society afloat. It's a tough job but someone's gotta do it."
Naba grunted again, though this time it sounded more like a chuckle. "Well, at least you came back and have the decency to order more than just one bun each." He jerked his head towards them. "Is this for here or to go?"
"We'll take it to go, thanks," Renji nodded to him.
"No time to chat huh? Fine. Maybe next time," Naba grumbled as he turned around to work on their order.
Renji huffed a sigh as he placed a few 1,000 Kan coins on the counter for the old man. He turned to Rukia. "Glad to see some things haven't changed."
Naba, the owner of the dumpling izakaya, was a grumpy old man who had been in Soul Society for centuries. He had hoped to find his family here when he died, but had no such luck. Instead, he built a new family until his second wife had died and his son grew up and became a Soul Reaper himself... before also dying in the field. So he spent his days running the izakaya and being somewhat of a grumpy old grandpa to many of the children and orphans in Inuzuri. He had also saved them from starvation many times, offering free food--within reason--to them and the other orphans.

Rukia joined Renji at the counter, wiping some dirt off it as she sat on one of the rickety stools. “Yeah, that’s good.” She looked around the place, recalling the first time she had been here, after she’d been invited into Renji’s gang and they insisted on celebrating. She’d tried to refuse, saying they should save their energy for the important things, but Renji and Fujimaru had each grabbed her arms and pulled her along with the rest taking up the rear. They walked into Naba’s place, making Rukia’s eyes bug out at their audacity as they called him out and begged for a bun each for the occasion of getting a new family member.
Rukia hadn’t known who to pay more attention to — the crazy kids she’d got herself mixed up with or the old man harrumphing from above them all, while he chewed on a green leaf.
“So you’re new,” he huffed. “You’re all skin and bones just like the rest of them.”
She’d stood on her tiptoes, trying to look intimidating. “I’m faster than them!”
“Ha!” the old man growled. “And bold too. Well, I suppose you’ll need it to keep this lot alive and out of trouble.” He turned to the ragged bunch behind her. “Alright, half a bun each. No more. I need to make a living here too. Now get out back before someone catches you. I’ll bring the buns out.”
Rukia watched the old man work in silence for a few minutes. “I’m glad you survived, sir,” she called out.
He waved over his shoulder. “I’m too mean to kick the bucket over something like world domination. It’s you young folks that pay the price for that. Us with some time here, we just continue to do what we always do. And don’t call me sir. I don’t do anything worth that kind of title.”
Rukia smiled. “Yes, ojii-san.”
He growled something under his breath again.

They waited for a while as Naba made their order. Renji looked around at the run down district, memories flooding back to him. Naba wasn't the only one who was kind to them. There were others, but not a lot. Most of the people in this district understood that it was dog eat dog. And the ones that were kind were usually the first to fall. But a few of them, like Naba, were strong enough to be kind and survive.
Eventually, Naba set their packed up order on the counter and counted out the coins. Renji stopped him, shaking his head. "Take them all. You've earned it, Oji-san."
Naba gave yet another grunt--this one less rough and dismissive. "Thanks, kid. Don't be a stranger, you hear me? You kids were the only thing helping me roll outta bed most days."
"We won't. Thanks, Oji-san," Renji handed Rukia the bag of dumplings and tapped a hand on the table. The old man nodded and went to put his coins away as Renji and Rukia walked off. "Alright. Let's go eat."

Rukia smiled. “Yes, let’s go!” She grabbed Renji’s sleeve with her free arm and took the lead, pulling him along behind her before she realized she was doing it.
“Hey, slow down!” Renji called out. “I’ve got more food here! We don’t want to drop it!”
She didn’t slow down but grinned behind her. “Then stay sharp, slowpoke!”
She picked up the pace unable to stop herself from smiling the entire time, still keeping ahold of Renji as she dodged people. She could have switched into shunpo but for some reason, she didn’t feel like it. But what she did feel was free.
It made absolutely no sense, but there it was. She chose to embrace the change.
“Hey, hey, if I drop this all, it’s a crime, you know.”
She laughed. “You’re so out of practice.” She glanced over her shoulder, happy she'd brought him with her to have at her back. “You’d think becoming a handsome soul reaper would make you more nimble on your feet, baka~"

"Hey! I was handsome before I became a Soul Reaper!" Renji grumbled. Rukia ignored him with a laugh.
It wasn't long and they had reached the river. They found a spot near a tree to sit and Renji began pulling out cartons of dumplings, chopsticks and spoons for the soup dumplings. "So," he asked. "How are you feeling? You seem like you're taking this pretty well.
Rukia hummed in agreement as she took her carton. "I am. I wasn't sure I would. I mean," she waved at the neighborhood with her chopsticks, "it's still a wreck. It's not really a nice place to come back to, but for some reason," she grinned at Renji, "it was what I needed after the memorial. There, I felt like a disappointment, a broken failure, and ...." her voice dropped, "someone who could never be enough to take some of the burden away from her brother." She stabbed a dumpling and ate it.
"I don't think that's true," Renji shook his head, eating some of the soup dumplings. For a slums izakaya dumpling, the soup was surprisingly rich and flavorful. "You're strong and a highly accomplished shinigami. You've worked harder than anyone I know. I mean hell, you worked your way up from the regular classes at the academy to being a Lieutenant. You even have your bankai. I don't know how any of that makes you a failure. You're doing well."
Renji paused for a moment. "If you feel like you're missing something or like you're failing at something... I was thinking... maybe seeing a therapist would be a good idea. Kita's been seeing one here in Soul Society. Dr Endo. It wouldn't hurt to try one session. I'll even go with you."

Rukia made a face at that suggestion. Enough of her personal life was public knowledge given her adoption into the Kuchiki clan and by ascending to lieutenant of Division 13. She didn’t really want to discuss even more with a stranger, even a well meaning one. She lifted her carton of soup and took a sip. “Maybe. I’ll think about it.”
She came here to get around such a session. If she could heal herself, and could seek support from the people important to her, she shouldn’t need someone new to take too much of an invested interest in her well being.
She looked over to Renji. “It may be easier with your company but this is not like when I lost Lieutnant Shiba. I’m not dismissing my life. There’s just….” she twirled her dumpling around with her chopsticks, “a lot of pressure anywhere we turn, and to some, losing a duel on the battlefield would mean less than what I continuously lost in Las Noches. It’s hard to stop the whispers in my head.”

Renji nodded in understanding. He couldn't possibly understand exactly what she had went through during that hell, but he understood that her feelings and emotions were complicated. He wouldn't push her too hard, but he wasn't going to just sit by and watch her suffer. Not when he knew she could get help. Professional help that could make sure she had the best chance possible at healing and leading a normal life after all of this trauma.
"I know it sounds gag-worthy having to tell your story to a stranger, but it won't be like telling some random shmuck on a street corner. And as much as I love you and I will always be there for you, unfortunately for both of us, I'm no doctor." He grinned and pointed at himself with his chopsticks. "Hell, I can't even use healing kido on a paper cut." When that earned him a giggle he smiled brighter. "It's not going to be easy but... I do honestly think it could help you. But whatever you decide, I respect your decision."

Rukia smiled as she listened to his words. “Thanks, Renji.” She knew it took a lot for him to say things like this, and that made her all the more warm on the inside. She leaned over and kissed him on the cheek, giggling as her boyfriend nearly dropped his carton on the ground. “You’re a good man and the best friend anyone can ask for. Being my boyfriend hasn’t changed that.”
A little movement out of the corner of her eye made her grin grow. She titled her head. “Should we let the thieves keep the pork buns?”
