Sojiro grabbed his hand, pointing at Kita. "It's Mom's fault, Gary. She was being slow and stubborn. And she won't accept my birthday present!"
"What did you try to give her?" Evita asked, tilting her head to the side.
Sojiro grinned. "I am not telling. I just have to think of another strategy and she will fold."

Gary looked to the young boy patting his shoulder and smiled. "You are determined aren't you?"
"You bet I am," Sojiro cried out, leaping in front of the group. He grabbed his glasses and slipped them on. "And I will win with you, TOO, Gary!"
Gary chuckled walking over to the chess table and offered the young man a seat. He looked to Sojiro with a glimmer in his eyes. "I will take that challenge, Ichimaru."

Kita's heart dropped looking away from Evita over to Mr. Faux and Sojiro in hearing his comment to her son. She looked at the old man as he looked her way, slowly he pushed up his glasses with a slight smirk across his lips. She gasp silently as her hand tightened on Evita's shoulder. The look in his eyes. The smirk on his face. She shook her head quickly drawing her free hand to her forehead as a flood of memories she had held back for years overwhelmed her.
She looked back up quickly at the two as the old man was now sitting across from her son.
No. Stop it, Kita. He is just a harmless old man. Nothing more. Nothing less.
She shook her head again and took a deep breath chasing away the feelings, then looked back to Evita.
"Does your mother and Ichigo know you are here?" She asked her trying to force the feelings and thoughts away as far as she could.

Evita smirked at Soji’s mother, inwardly amused at how a wave of worry disappeared with the focus on her. “Yes, Aunt Kita,” she purred, “they left me here half an hour ago to get ice cream. There’s a festival about chocolate for Mom. ”
Pushing Kita’s hand off her, she walked over to the chess table and sat down next to Gary, her attention switching to the game starting. The expressions on Soji’s face were especially fun to watch. She looked to Gary again as they started their opening moves, curious about a spark she had felt at Soji’s challenge.

Gary took out a coin and flipped it as they both called it in the air. Sojiro calling tails, getting the first move. With Evita watching and Kita sitting across the way reading a book she had brought along, the two sat and played. After the fourth move and coming back to him, Gary stopped to study the board carefully.
"So tell me, Sojiro. The present you have for your mother. Was it the one we spoke of last week?" Gary looked slightly up from the board at him as he watched his little head nod.
"And she won't see it. Will she?"
Sojiro's head shook slowly a he looked down at the board a clear sadness in his eyes.
Gary went to move a piece as Sojiro sat up and watched him carefully. Shaking his head Gary changed his mind and started looking at the board again. "May I suggest something?"
Sojiro looked from the board to him. "What is that?"
"If you really want this and to make you both happy." He paused, "a compromise. Keep your fathers name and take your mothers name along with it. If you give your mother something in return--" Gary paused again as he looked up at Kita sitting on the near by bench with her nose in her book.
A wide smirk crossed his face as he pushed up his glasses still looking at her. "She will be more likely to come around and see things your way and you will get what you want in return."

Sojiro looked to the side away from his mother. “Sojiro Miyamoto Ichimaru.” He looked up at Gary and then over to his mom. “Mom, can I?”
“Can you what, sweetie?” Kita asked, looking up from her book.
“Can I have your name AND Dad’s name? That way neither of you will be alone. You will both always have me.” He spread his arms wide and then gasped as Gary took advantage of his lapse in attention to take his knight.
“No!” Soji exclaimed, spinning back around. “You were supposed to take the bishop, Gary.”
Evita snickered and Soji frowned at her. “It’s not over yet, and why do you always take his side?”

Evita smiled. “That’s not true. You shouted so he’s winning. Which means you’re losing.”
Sojiro kept his eyes on Evita, slightly narrowed in concentration. “You can’t always win, Mom and Kisuke say so. You take risks for the greater good. ”
Evita tilted her head the other way. “You left your piece open and lost it. That means you’ll lose, right?”
“It does not. You can’t learn without mistakes.”
She leaned closer, eyes shimmering. “Why would you do something that would get you into trouble?” She looked to Gary, waiting for his own input.

Gary chuckled lightly his eyes closing as his hand rested to the top of her head. "What he did was not a bad thing, Evita. If his strategy was flawless he could have set me up with a move like that, but because of one piece not being in its place. I was able to move in and put a hole in his trap." Gary looked to Sojiro and smiled with a tilt of his head.
"I have only seen that move played by one other man, Sojiro. Where did you learn it from?"

Sojiro looked up. “You’ve played with Kisuke?” he asked. He looked down again, frowning slightly. “He didn’t tell me that.” Perking up, he moved his bishop back to the startling point. “I can still win!”

Gary did not answer Sojiro in his question, he only moved his pieces back into place looking at the young boy that sat across from him. He was truly his fathers son and in time he know more of the Ichimaru blood would shine though. Gary smirked with an inward chuckle as Sojiro looked up at him announcing yet again he would defeat him. They game proceed as the two sat a played their next game. Gary deep in thought not only with the game but with the young boy sitting in front of him.
His determination was both of his father and mother. Where neither of them knew when to give up. Neither did little Sojiro. For years, the two of them had been playing chess in the park. Sojiro watching and learning his strategy, studying others in the park as they played and learning from his Uncle Kisuke and Uncle Take-jii. The boy was intelligent beyond his years from being not only the child of two intelligent people, but being raise and mentored by a group that was just as intelligent as his parents, if not more. The boy was a true prodigy to his name. When the time came Sojiro would be a true danger if his path were to change from the light to the shadows. He would surpass his father, etching a new fear into peoples mind of the Ichimaru name.
Gary sat up looking at Sojiro, a smirk spread across his lips once more as he placed his rook on the board. "Checkmate."

Soji sat up and leaned over, looking closely at the board before him. “It can’t be…” he muttered. He scrambled down from the bench and looked at it from another angle. “There's a hole ….. somewhere..... ” He walked around a few more times, ignoring his mother and Gary. Finally, he sat down again. “You win again, Gary.”
He held up his hand. “That was a good game. Do we have time for a third, mom?”

Kita looked up from her book with Sojiro's question as she watched the two playing chess shake hands. Looking at her watch she then looked back to the bench where Evita and Gary were sitting. Kita noticed she was no longer there. She looked back to Sojiro and Mr. Faux.
"Where is Evita?" Kita stood from her sitting position at the bench she was at as she looked around the park for her.

Evita grinned from her hiding place behind the bushes. Aunt Kita wasn’t easy to trick except when she was reading or her head was swirling with worry and sadness. And as the game went on between Soji and Gary, her mind had lost its keen edge. Evita hadn’t been breaking any rules. And yet she had asked. It was time for revenge.
Evita had slid off the bench at the chess table and crept behind her, waiting for her aunt to notice her missing. She shifted in her crouch and as Kita started to spin around in worry, she leaped out.
“BEHIND YOU!” she shrieked.

Kita flinched slightly at Evita's raised voice as she took a deep breath shaking her head as she looked at her. "Young lady, you're going to give someone a heart attack screaming like that. Get over here and behave yourself."
Kita pointed as the bench she was sitting at previously with Mr. Faux. As Kita turned looking back at the two she asked them. "How long do you think one more game will take?" she looked to Sojiro. "Tessai will have dinner done in about twenty minutes."

Soji shook his head. “Not enough time. I can’t beat him like that.”
He jumped from the bench and looked to Gary with wide eyes. “It’s too bad you can’t go to the party, Gary. It will be fun. And Aunt Yumiko promised something cool.” He leaned closer. “It’s a secret from mom. I hope it’s fireworks.”
