She tilted her head. “I wonder if that is always the case. In chess, it is true that the queen is your most powerful piece, but she rarely captures the king on her own. And because of who she is….” Yumiko fell silent for a few moments and then blinked to free her thoughts. “She takes the spotlight. Other pieces’ power can be overlooked.” She waited for him to choose a seat.

He looked her way as he sat down in the chair at the chess board, hooking his cane to the side of the table in plain site. "Well Yumiko, life is not always like chess. Just because you have the queen surrounded, don't think the king is not capable of hurting you."
He gestured to the seat across from him for her to sit. Slowly he went through the object of the game with her to refresh her memory of the game, the moves for each pieces and the pieces themselves. When he was finished he took a coin from his pocket and smiled at her. "Head or tails, my dear?"

Yumiko’s head snapped up from the board at that warning as memory clashed with dreams. Aizen’s breath brushed against the back of her neck and her throat tightened, recalling Vale’s eyes. She shook herself free and paid attention to Mr. Faux’s explanation. She smiled lightly as he asked the question. “Heads, please.”

His eyes smiled warmly at her from behind his glasses as he tossed the coin in the air letting it fall to the ground. It spun for a second then fell flat. He looked at her with a nod. "looks like you got luck of the flip, my dear." He passed his hand over the board.
"Let the games begin."
He adjusted himself in his chair and watched the young girl study the board before she made her first move.

Yumiko looked to the board and then over at her opponent. She started with the pawn next to her bishop, moving it forward once. She looked over to Mr. Faux. “I don’t like starting,” she admitted. “It seems easy enough, but it’s not.”

"The first move is always the hardest. It could make or break you." He smirked from across the table at her. "Though chess helps you to concentrate, improve your logic. It teaches you to play by the rules and take responsibility for your actions, how to problem solve in an uncertain environment, but--" He paused moving his pawn forward to face off hers. "--In life, as in chess, forethought wins."
He sat back and waited for her next move.

Yumiko frowned slightly. She never liked that particular move. It seemed like her opponent was taunting her. Or was new at the game. “Forethought…. can’t prepare you for everything,” she murmured. “Feelings are the opposite of logic sometimes.” She moved her knight out in front of the rook and pawn on the far left.

"How wrong you are there, little miss. One should never let their heart rule over logic. In some cases it can get you into more hot water than you ever expected. Logic thought may not always be the funnest way to go in some cases, but it will never lead you down a path of failure or loss."
He moved his rook forward and smiled at her. "So tell me about yourself, little miss. Do you have family in town?"

Yumiko shook her head as she moved another pawn forward, this time twice. “I am visiting some friends.” She smiled. “Though they are like family to me in some ways more than my own. There’s… distance in my family. That doesn’t exist here. There’s space to breathe and consider.” She looked back at him. "Do you have family, sir?"

Gary shook his head, "I am a dying breed, little miss. They broke the mold when the Gods created me." He moved a piece forward taking her pawn. Yumiko sighing softly as he did. Gary smirked motioning for her next move.
After a few more moves between the two Gray's watch started to beep as he looked down at it shutting it off. he looked across the table at her as she was still studying the board for her next move.

Yumiko barely heard the timer beep. She was too busy contemplating making this next gamble or to take the safe path. Her eyes narrowed as she looked to Mr. Faux's position and then back to her own. Finally, she sighed and guided her bishop down the line to the end, sweeping his rook off the board. She took a breath. It would be difficult to get to her bishop in that corner but it would be just as difficult for him to capture the piece unless he brought his queen back. But.... it felt good to take that risk.

Gray smiled at her move and nodded courtly at her. "Well little miss, I thought I would have more time to play this game but I guess I was wrong." He took his cane in hand and stood. "May I take a rain check and we start a new game another day?"
Yumiko stood with Gary a smile across her lips. "I would like that, thank you."
Gary smiled and bow to the young lady, "thank you for understanding." He patted her hand that rested to the table. "I look forward to it then. Have a good day." He then turned and started his slow decent from the park.

Yumiko looked after him for a few moments and then looked back at their game, particularly at the white bishop surrounded by black pieces. The black queen stood near the white cluster of pawns and knight, not quite in the position for striking at but close enough to intimidate, but taking that rook lessened that presence. Striking back. Even if it seemed a dangerous position for later. Thinking over the short game and what had been on her mind beforehand, her life in Las Noches, Yumiko started putting the pieces away. She set the board and worn box in the shelf underneath. A few hours later, a red rose drifted in the lake and Yumiko returned to the shop.

"The Black King and His Shadow":A couple months later, Vale walked into the park, a box a bundled roses in his arms and a messenger bag hanging from his shoulder. He gave the box of roses to a vendor and nodded in thanks. Pocketing the money given in exchange for the flowers, Vale walked around the park enjoying the beauty of the day. He strolled past the rows of benches. Past the fountain surrounded by painters and kids making wishes. He lifted his head as he walked past a few tables of old and young men playing chess. His eyes wide with confusion, Vale turned to face a familiar figure. "Aizen?"

Gray looked up from his chess game with the young man sitting across from him, his eyes narrowing slightly at the sight of Vale Tervaden. Pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose he looked back to the young man and smiled warmly at him.
"Please excuse me, something has popped up that I need to take care. Would it be a problem to reconvene in about an hour?"
The young man nodded smiling back as he got up from the chair and left the old man there with the new arrival of his friend. When Vale sat down across from him, Aizen chuckled softly.
"So you can see me can you?"
