"He stole my zanpakuto by means of sneaking up on me and beating me for the fun of it via his connection to the fire god, Alister. When he opens a gate between realms, time stops. Only he, or those he permits, can move. He stole Kurosaki's at the same time."
Shunsui paused. It would seem the quiet zanjutsu teacher wasn't a fan of the system, and by association, himself. On the other hand, it didn't seem there was much camaraderie between the brothers. Brothers. He was still digesting that. The commander sighed, rubbing at the scar above his eyepatch. Perhaps he should have waited until Juushiro could return before taking on this interview. But, no, his best friend was needed in Karakura too much. And this was his job.
The Captain Commander decided to take the plunge.
"I will say enough about their relationship but no more. I am sure you are aware of Central's past decree regarding Ryouma by now, and giving her my protection and support is the only way I can make amends for that now." He lowered his head. "That being said, Yumiko and Tervaden have been a couple for over six years - after Tervaden became human on a whim for one of Alister's wishes. Before that, they were drawn to each other in Las Noches - when she broke free of Aizen's illusions. She helped Tervaden retrieve his zanpakuto and when he was human (but with his memories and temper) control his dark side. She bargained for his life with Alister when he was near death, and he faked his death to spare her the bite of that. And when he returned and Yumiko hesitated in going with him, the god did something to her and Vale took her. Yumiko recently escaped Las Noches again but is still recovering from wounds at Tervaden's hand."
Shunsui sighed and lifted his head. "Does that change anything you have to say?"

"Forgive me, Captain Commander." replied Satoshi, pushing his frames up along his nose. "It does not." Satoshi rose from his seat on the bed, stumbling as he took a step forward. Caught by the Captain Commander, Satoshi nodded as the man helped him back to his bedside.
"You wish for me to speak more on my brother. Why? Surely you know more abut him than I do."
"There have been far too many times I have been duped by that man," the Commander muttered. "Anything at all would be useful." He paused and then slid the door to the room shut. "In seven years time, Aizen will once again try to take the realms, and the fact of the matter is that I know more about Aizen, his plans, and his past right hand than I do with his current, your brother."
"That is a trait of the Tetsuya clan. We are not one to share our past or our plans for the future. But, if you seek information, perhaps Yumiko Ryouma would be a better source than myself."
Satoshi sighed, feeling the tension increase in the room. "What is it you seek from me, Captain?"

Shunsui chuckled. "You're as straight as the morning wind, aren't you?" He rubbed his chin with a slight pout. "You're even leaving me little room for any fun with words." He shook his head with a twinkle in his eye and reached behind him. He set the black zanpakuto of Kurosaki's and the braided silver hilt of Yumiko's down at the foot of the bed. "I know when I don't stand a chance of convincing someone to go further than they have. So I will spare you my attempts of persuasion to get you to join the Gotei 13 as a captain. For now. But," he paused, "if you do have some mercy in you, I would like you to deliver these returned items to the Shop in Karakura. Just show yourself to Kisuke before returning to your students."
The Captain Commander stepped back, tipping his hat to man now frowning even more at him. "It is nice to know one's allies in times of danger."

Satoshi looked to the Captain Commander, speaking as the man began to make his exit. "I will consider you offer, Captain." Making aother attempt to stand, Satoshi turned toward the Captain Commander.
"Yumiko Ryouma, she is the ward of Captain Ukitake, yes?" The Captain Commander nodded in response. "How does the Captain feel about Seto? And, if I may ask, is it him that you are looking to replace?"

The Captain Commander turned around once more. "It's not Juu-chan you'd be replacing, and he has many feelings in regards to Seto, as you call him. One of the prominent ones is guilt - for failing to end this centuries ago. At the same time, he pities the man in a way most of us couldn't."
Before Tetsuya Sensei could reply, Shunsui turned again. "Rest up. You know how crazy kids can be when you take away their favorite people." He saluted the teacher and left the room.

Just as the door closed, it sprung open again, Lieutenant Nanao entering at a brisk pace with a leaf of papers in her arms. She dumped them on the patient’s bedside table, fixing him baleful violet eyes. “Your run in with the criminal Vale Tervaden is a matter of security for all of Soul Society. It is a matter of honor that you write down all you do know - even if it is irrelevant now. I have created a list to start.” Pushing up her glasses, she pulled out typed form from within the pages she had given him and proceed to explain it in the same dictatorial tone. “Write down any haunts he used to have or may return to now. That includes any residences. Recall any past names or associates. And do not forget his hobbbies. Finally,” she lowered her gaze to meet his silent one, “it is imperative that you describe the battle between you two and name any weakness you exploited to earn his withdrawal.”
“Do you have any questions, Sensei Tetsuya?”
Satoshi blinked several times, looking at the collection before him, and then glance back up at the stern petite woman before him. "You're a bit....demanding," he murmured.
Nanao's eyes narrowed at him. "Am I? I beg to differ."
Satoshi sighed. "It is an argument you would lose, I'm afraid."

Just then, the Commander returned, holding another collection of documents in his hand. “Thank you for your rapid response, Nanao. This is exactly what I need. And I apologize in advance, Sensei. I am afraid your taciturn denial to elaborate isn’t something that can be allowed at this point.” An assistant brought in a chair along with the noonday meal for all three of them. The Captain Commander waited for him to depart before turning back to his target. His eyes narrowed, a fire brimming behind them. “How much are you aware of the destruction caused by the Ayakashi Sada Teruo?”
Satoshi’s eyes narrowed. “That’s an unfair question, commander. Those were my students.”
“And that creature was created by your brother’s own hand.” Shunsui opened up the folder he was carrying and set down the written confession Alister had delivered to him after his master’s 'fake' death. “I would read it carefully, if I were you, and then, I have more to say on the matter. And you will listen.”

Satoshi took his time reading over the materials given to him. Though, filled with nightmarish deeds, it was insight into who his brother was. As he sifted through the sheets of paper, Satoshi's stomach turned. Disgust replaced his feeling of rage, as he stopped at the pages detailing the Ayakashi's attack on the academy. His students. His students.
Looking up from the pages, he looked to the Commander and his Lieutenant. "There is no honor left in him...None. Not since he lost his way and chose to follow that self-important piece of shit, Sousuke Aizen."
"Seto Tetsuya is my twin brother. I was raised by our grandparents, while he was raised by our mother. After our mother's passing, I saw him only once before our last meeting. Until the night he took the lives of his division, I believed him to be quite like myself. Only a bit more tolerant of the world."
Satoshi sighed, feeling the pain of his injuries. "My brother is dangerously pliable. If you could persuade him to follow the path his was on instead of his current one, perhaps..."
"We have tried."
"Try harder."

Shunsui adjusted his hat. “Before this offense, that might have been possible, but after this….” He paused, eyes narrowing. “What he did to Yumiko was atrocious. On top of that, he was instrumental in trying to destroy the family closest to Kisuke Urahara besides his own. Tervaden has burned his bridges. Even if Yumiko was willing to try to save that man again because of a love they shared, Juushiro, her friends, and our shifty shopkeeper would not let her. I wouldn’t even have to step in. And by alienating Urahara, he lost the option of fading into Karakura as a human.” He lowered his hat. “Both of those men will dip into dark sides of themselves to stop any more harm from that quarter. Trust me when I say any chances of persuasion are over.”

Satoshi slammed a clenched fist into the side table. His anger was taking hold of him and was starting to show. "Then, you will undoubtedly persecute former Captain Gin Ichimaru! Correct?"
"Gin Ichimaru has been pardoned. And -"
"I am aware of what good he has done. But, under no circumstance does that out weight a vile history of mass murder and deceit! If you are to pardon him, then you must pardon every man whose history is drowned in darkness and whose future begs caution because of his past!" Satoshi's fist slammed into the side table once more, this time cracking its top.
"If you view me as wrong in this manner, then you are no better than the Central 46 of old."

The commander sighed. “What is it with people giving me more work when my job is already so filled with tiresome details?” He looked up. “Let me rephrase my statement. Gin Ichimaru was sentenced. He escaped death but can’t step foot in Soul Society unless escorted. There is also the fact that Kisuke Urahara still stands by him. We especially need that man in this time. Even Central 46 agrees with me on that matter.”
“And you need to get Seto off his current path,” Satoshi murmured in response.
“I am not sacrificing Yumiko any further for that. And without Kisuke, how, do you expect us to do that when his own brother won’t do anything?”

"You need him? An exiled man? You trust what he has to say about another convicted of crimes?" questioned Satoshi. "Gin Ichimaru is as fickle as Seto. He only waits for his Master's call to return to his side. But, I understand, Captain Commander. Your path of corruption involves a man who should have no bearing on this, or any other, situation. The decision to pardon Gin Ichimaru based on what you have told me, is a foolish one."
Satoshi sat on the bed edge, eyes narrowed and locked on the Captain Commander. "Gin Ichimaru is allowed his freedom. To live in happiness with a woman he loves and his child. His only restriction, is that if he returns to the Soul Society, he has must have an escort."
Pointing to the stacks of paperwork, Satoshi continued his case. "According to this...According to you...Seto Tetusya had found his peace. He was the man I once called brother. It was only when you and your band of corruption made it obvious that you did not trust him...That you were watching him...Only then, did his resolve waver. Peace is something that every man has a right to. But, you took his and blamed for it; while you allow a man convicted of worse crimes have his."
Satoshi grew silent, letting his gaze fall to the crooked floorboards. He inhaled deeply, filling his lungs with the stale air of his room. "Am I wrong, Captain?"

Shunsui sighed. “It is not so simple to compare the two, but I see I will have to explain it.” He poured himself some water and took a long drink. “It is impossible for us to ever know the full weight of Ichimaru’s crimes because unlike your brother most were done in the shadows. However, your brother’s crimes have been blatant crimson streaks across history. Both have served the dangerous criminal Sousuke Aizen, which could be a reason to lock them BOTH up. However,” he held up his hand, “the Gotei is the hand of justice and the shield of war. Ichimaru can be controlled by Kisuke Urahara, who was framed for his crimes against the Gotei. As long as the shopkeeper can control the snake, the Gotei would be fools to execute Ichimaru for his knowledge of Aizen alone. If you don’t trust or want to try Kisuke Urahara, then you would have to take that up with Central and discuss the tendencies of the 12th division. What they do there can be dark. It’s the same with the Stealth Force. But both divisions are essential for the Gotei to remain as the defense for the realms. Ichimaru’s survival may well keep Aizen from winning this war.”
“And to your other accusation, your brother was given his peace. Like Ichimaru, he was watched for the safety of the Realms. But unlike Ichimaru, Tervaden’s chaos couldn’t be controlled. And each time anyone tries, the result is worse than before. First, it was the Seventh Division. Recently, it was an attempt to burn all of Seireitei. Shall we wait to see what happens the third time? When the prelude was to attempt to break the only person he cared about? Ichimaru is a wild card but he is weighted towards our side. Tervaden - there is no way to know when he will flip again.”

"So..." began Satoshi, running his fingers along the crack on the bedside table. "Because you are not aware of all of Gin Ichimaru's crimes, they do not exist and can not be held against him. Because he has a babysitter...He is free. It all seems fair to me. In a corrupt sort of way."
Satoshi laid down, his back to the Captain Commander and his Lieutenant. "When he killed our mother, no one could find him. No one but me. He was covered in her blood, shaking. He told me he tried to take it back."
"Where did you find him?" asked Nanao.
Satoshi sat up enough to glance over his shoulder. "I will not assist in the persecution of a man who can be saved. Please go."

Nanao’s hands clenched. “You - how can you say- Captain - He’s been- ”
Shunsui held up a hand, quieting Nanao before she could voice her opinion on the teacher’s belief.
“It’s alright, Nanao-chan,” he murmured. “Not everyone will understand.” He stood up. “I apologize for disturbing your rest, Sensei.”
Tetsuya’s eyes narrowed. “If you are coming back with another argument after a breath of fresh air, don’t bother.”
The Captain Commander chuckled. “I am not retreating or looking for backup. It would serve no purpose in this case. Neither of us are ashamed of our arguments. And if that is what you wish to believe, no one has the right to change it. It's not turning the sky darker..." He tipped his hat up, eyes somber, as he scratched at the scar by his eye. "I'll leave you to your peace, as you wish - that which comes in many ways and at many costs. And you should know that the same is true for justice. There has never been one face of justice, contrary to what you see. It’s a myriad of games and sacrifices we all use to win, and they never will all match. It doesn't matter if someone might wish they did.”
He turned around. “Sleep tight, Sensei. Perhaps - if you wish to protect someone’s peace, you should consider being the sheath that will be scarred for it.” He patted Nanao’s head. “Come, Nanao. We have more stops to make.”
"But Captain-"
"It's alright," he repeated in the same gentle tone, catching her eyes. Lowering her head, she pushed her glasses up and started gathering the materials they had brought with them.
