'He Learns Her Name":
Kenji wrestled in bed, fighting his sleep after his mother had put him to bed only minutes before. He rolled over on his side to face the door of his room. Beside the door was a shelf on which the Ausachi the Captain Commander gave him rested. Rolling out of bed, Kenji fell to the floor, his feet tangled in his blankets. Once untangled, he silently scrambled over to the small stepping stool at the foot of his bed. "Heavy!" he whined trying to pick up the stool, before deciding to drag it to the shelf.
With the stool set under the shelf, Kenji extended his little arms trying to reach his sword. Even standing on the tips of his toes couldn't put him within reach. So, he leapt up and headbutted the shelf, causing it to shake and the sword to roll off. Kenji plopped to the floor rubbing his head. "Ouch!" The blade stopped rolling and rested near his bed. Hearing the footsteps of one of his parents, Kenji quickly crawled over to the sword picked it up and hopped back into bed. He covered himself and his sword with his blanket and closed his eyes tight.
His door slid open and he could hear a chuckle come from the doorway. "Good night, Kenji Urahara."
Kenji smiled beneath his blanket.
"And, try not to stick yourself with that thing, ok." The door slid shut.
Excited, he kicked off his blanket and sat up in his bed. He held the blade high and rested its hilt on top of his head. "Hello again. Daddy says," he began speaking to the sword. "You got a name. And, I gotta learn it. He said that I can't call you Barnaby because that's already Barnaby's name." Kenji lowered the sword and pressed his tiny face to the hilt. "My name is Kenji Ura-ha-ra." He nodded. He closed his eyes tightly, opening them a few moments later to find large ice blue eyes staring back at him. Kenji tilted his head. The cub sitting in front of him did the same.
The cubs eyes widened as he leaned closer to Kenji. "Ken-ji." Kenji's own eyes widened.
"You can talk?!" The cub nodded and leaned closer until it's forehead pressed against Kenji's. Kenji and the cub sat forehead to forehead in silence, both sets of eye wide. "Is your name Kenji too?" The cubs eyes squinted shut as it rolled away.
"Ken-ji."
"Kenji is my name." shouted Kenji before putting his hands over his mouth. "You can't have my name. It's mine." He whispered.
The cub bounced around on Kenji's bed, rolling in the blankets then finally resting on the pillow. "Ken-ji." It licked its paws and rubbed it ear. "I like your name. Ken-ji."
Kenji reached out and began to gently pet the tiger cub. "I like my name too. My daddy gave it to me. Mommy too. Do you have a mommy and daddy?" The cub yawned and rolled off the pillow and cuddled into Kenji's blanket.
"No." answered the cub. "Just you."
"Well, where do you live?"
"In here." The cub's paw rested on the sheathed blade.
"How do you fit in there?"
"I'm a spirit, silly." The cub yawned again and closed its eyes. Kenji lay down beside the cub and pet it until they both drifted into a gentle sleep.
"I...Kenji." the boy mumbled.
The tiger cub rested its tiny paw on Kenji's face. "Arakure Tora. Tora Tora, Kenji. Tora..." the cub mumbled in it sleep. "And, Ken-ji."
