Tsukiro grinned. "Nope."
He pushed and tried to jab at Kairo again. Kairo pushed back and Tsukiro then switched to pulling, trying to get the staff away from him. Kairo realized this and pulled as well. He kicked out and Tsukiro dodged. Kairo pulled harder, then suddenly Tsukiro let go. Kairo's momentum caused the staff to smack him in the face. He released the staff and grabbed at his bleeding nose. Tsukiro then reached out with his foot and popped the staff up into his hand. He struck at both of Kairo's sides, then his stomach and then spun around, twirled the staff and knocked his feet away. Again, Kairo was on his back. Tsukiro planted his foot in Kairo's chest and jabbed the staff at his neck, but with out hitting him. Kairo flinched none the less, then looked up at him from behind his hands.
Tsukiro grinned again. "In fact, I think I'm getting better." He pulled his foot away and lowered the staff. He reached down to help Kairo to his feet.

Chuckling and shaking his head, one hand still on his bleeding nose, Kairo accepted the offer, taking his childhood friend’s hand. He smirked and yanked, pulling Tsukiro down. At the same time, he slammed his knee into his stomach. With a groan, Tsukiro fell to one side. Kairo chuckled. “Sensei would say you deserved that for showing mercy,” he called out as he lay on his back, the cool floor pressing up into this stretched muscles. Tsukiro grunted. “I’ll quote you on that next time if you complain about all the bruises, idiot.” Kairo laughed and set a hand on his stomach. “At least I made you work for your win.”
“Damn right,” Tsukiro mumbled. Kairo chuckled again.
"Was there a point in hunting me down or was this what you needed, scaredy cat?"

Tsukiro took a deep breath, looking up at the ceiling. He blinked then shook his head. "I don't remember." Kairo laughed, pinching his nose. Then suddenly he gagged, choking as blood seeped down his throat through is sinuses. Tsukiro shook his head. "Idiot. Don't lean back when your nose is bleeding." Kairo suddenly sat up, spitting blood into his hand. He then punched Tsukiro in the stomach. Tsukiro laughed and pulled a handkerchief he handed it to his friend who was still gagging. Then he suddenly remembered. "Ah. That's right. We were supposed to discuss the changes to the Stealth Force. You know you're the other half of my brain most days."

Wiping his mouth and hand, Kairo chuckled hoarsely. “What do you mean half?” he teased, leaning forward and pinching his nose in an effort to stop the bleeding and the low throb in the back on his head. “I’m more like two-thirds of your brain ever since you fell for a girl,” he continued. Tsukiro swung lazily at him and Kairo swayed to the side. He cleared his throat. “Getting to the point then, I am available at the moment, if you still want to crack your skull open with ideas. You seem to have scared all my opponents away and the third seats have taken all the paperwork again.”

Tsukiro stood up and laughed. "It wouldn't be the first time. And you need a girlfriend." He held out his hand to Kairo. Kairo looked at him with an expression that said, "Yeah right." Tsukiro rolled his eyes and grabbed Kairo's wrist, pulling him up. "Come on, let's go find a quiet spot. Your squad tends to be loud." Kairo grunted in response, using kido on his nose when he couldn't stop the bleeding naturally.
As they walked back to the front of the barracks, Tsukiro turned to Kairo. "So, question. Who is this Naomi Kato? The fifth seat. Know anything about her?"

Kairo rubbed the bridge of his healing nose. "Naomi-san?" he repeated. He chuckled shortly. "I suppose you would have missed the gossip about that since you were falling for Kita in Karakura Town and disappearing more often than normal then."
"Miss what?"
"Central being assholes," Kairo stated, blunt. He sighed. "It didn't surprise me that they were holding a noble with powers captive for decades, not after that."
"After what?" Tsukiro pressed, both confused and a little angry that he had obviously missed something big.
Kairo frowned. "Naomi Kato is only part soul reaper. Her mother is human." He continued walking.

Tsukiro gaped at Kairo. "I thought Ichigo Kurosaki was the only one." Kairo only shrugged. Tsukiro clenched his fists and bared his teeth. "Let me guess. They didn't like the idea of another powerful being besides Kurosaki, and that she was human to boot, so they kept her here, hidden beneath everyone else's noses."
"Pretty much, probably," Kairo snorted blood from his nose. "You know how 'up yours'ish Central can be. And on top of that, rumor has it that she's only allowed one visit to her mother per month."
Tsukiro shook his head and growled. "Ungrateful, inconsiderate bastards!"

Kairo nodded. "Well, anyway, that's about as far as the gossip got before the senior officers and captains put a stop to it. Then our captain accepted her into Thirteenth Division." He threaded a hand through his hair, combing it out of the mess from their brawl. "In spite of what brought her here, she's usually quite happy, even if she is kind of quiet. She likes borrowing books from everyone and often volunteers to take care of Ukitake if he's taken a turn for the worst," Kairo frowned, "which has happened more often than normal now." He sighed and stopped fixing his hair, letting it rest over his eyes. "So why are you asking?" he prompted.

Tsukiro got an odd look on his face. "We may have bumped into each other." When he looked over at Kairo, Kairo had a look of suspicious curiosity. "Oh hush. It was just an accident. We ran into each other and we apologized, and I asked her where you were." Kairo's expression widened into a foxish grin. The glint in his eyes was knowing and smug. Tsukiro scoffed and shook his head, continuing to the front of the barracks. "Give it a rest."

Kairo shook his head, his wicked smirk growing. "No way, Tsuki. The fact that you probably tripped over your words as soon as you saw her..." Kairo laughed lightly as Tsukiro blinked and blushed, giving himself away. "That's too good," he snickered, pointing. "Here, you have a girlfriend and you're still tripping over yourself at the sight of a beautiful girl after meeting Kita." He shook his head. "You spent too much time ignoring them that you've gone in overdrive."

Tsukiro growled, pressing a palm into his cheek. "I don't ignore them! I just don't fawn over or flirt with them. After training with Yoruichi and her cousin falling for me, I had had enough womanly charms to last me a lifetime. Then I met Kita and all that stuff just came naturally. With anyone else it's still the same. A foreign concept."

Kairo continued to smirk. "And Naomi-san is just that pretty that you lose your control again?" Tsukiro's fading blush reinforced itself and he swung a punch at him. Kairo jumped back and hit a rock, falling over onto his back again.
Tsukiro's head entered his vision. "Were you really part of the Stealth Force once?" he asked, straight-faced. "I'm starting to doubt that fact with the way you keep falling on your ass today."
Kairo groaned. "Shut up and help me up."
"And fall on the ground next to you?" his childhood friend retorted. "I think I will pass." He stood up again. "Well, get up, you clown. I need that brain."
"Shadup," Kairo growled, tossing a rock his direction as he sat up.

Tsukiro tilted his head and dodged, grinning. "Hurry up slowpoke. We have a lot to do today." Kairo punched him when he caught up but Tsukiro only laughed at him, punching him back. They walked out of the barracks together, off to plot their ideas.

"Passage of Time":
Juushiro sighed and set his book down, looking back over his courtyard. In the next room, his co-third seats kept the silence back with their constant bickering of orders, insults, and questions as they sorted the paperwork he had finished late last night. Looking back down at the book of poems in his hand, he replaced the slip of paper holding his place, coughing silently. Shaking his head, he rose, going to prepare snacks and check on those hard at work.
Another month had passed.
Kiyone and Sentaro had become quite efficient with sorting all the papers that came into the division over the years. He didn’t have much corrections to make and set their snack of cookies and tea on one side of the table before stepping back again. He chuckled as they leapt at the plate and started another lively argument. That is, until Rukia appeared from her office and slammed a leaf of booklets over both their heads. “Quiet, idiots, no one can think with that racket going on,” she admonished with a severe look in her dark eyes. “Can’t you even enjoy a snack without arguing?!” Juushiro laughed quietly, feeling the weight on his heart ease.
He closed his eyes.

Kairo laughed and walked into the room with a stack of papers under one of his hands and an apple in his other. "But Rukia-chan," he teased, "if you took away their arguments, what would they talk about? Are you dooming the rest of the division to the torture of silence?"
He ducked as she swung her weapon at him next. "It's not torture. It's a blessing!" she huffed then grabbed a rabbit-shaped cookie from the table.
"HEY!" Kiyone whined, watching her. "That's the cutest one."
Sentaro took a turtle shaped one. "She is the lieutenant, dummy."
"I know that, and who are you calling dummy, slowpoke. I've done twice as much work as you!" Smiling as they started getting into it, he turned to Captain Ukitake, who opened his eyes again and smiled at him.
His eyes are looking weary again, Kairo noted to himself as he bowed, holding out the papers. "Most of our division passed the situation quiz set this week, but you wanted to see the answers yourself after I marked them."
