"The Number One for Recovery":
Shunsui let out another sigh, leaning over the pile of papers laid out on his futon. He had just finished listening to the second report of those left in Karakura Town. It had been delivered by Captain Hitsugaya, and he had expressed a courteous request to let his division remain in the town even after the casualties they had suffered. Shunsui had murmured he would consider their request and had told him to await orders. It was the second time the young captain had asked. Soul Society learned the full extent of Aizen’s success after the chaos of the battle had passed. Because Lieutenant Kira and Shuuei’s reiatsu vanished at the same time, their captains had believed that they had gone into hiding. Both were talented enough to hide their energy like that. However, two of Captain Soi Fon’s division found the terribly injured Shuuei on the plain beneath the Sokyoku Hill. Unconscious, barely alive, it was obvious who had delivered the one crippling blow. Aizen had left the main battlefield to play with the lieutenants before cutting off their hope. It also answered who he had taken. Captain Mutsu had paled during the captain’s meeting, and the Captain Commander didn’t think it was all rage. Captain Mayuri complained loudly about the mind control occurrence happening in Karakura Town and not in Soul Society, where the infected would have made brilliant subjects. However, Kisuke and Hachi had dealt with that issue before sending the most injured to Fourth Division. He had mumbled about next time he would isolate the new espada’s energy sources and determine who to capture. Tired, worn out from his own wounds and the rest of the knowledge he carried, the commander didn’t contest his zealousness but he did assign most clean up and rebuilding to the 12th division.
After requesting to borrow Lieutenant Abarai and Rukia-chan in order to return the girls to Karakura, he dismissed the meeting. In a few days’ recovery time, he would also alter the division placed there. Now that time had come, and he still hadn’t reached a decision. He knew what Yama-jii would have done. Even if Captain Hitsugaya’s division had a reason to stay behind, that motive made them the least level-headed choice. Shunsui closed his eyes. He needed to discuss this with Juushiro, but his best friend could not be moved. His hand clenched.

Don’t even think about it, Captain,” the stern feminine voice of his lieutenant called out. She entered, bearing a hearty tray of lunch on one hand and a tray with bandages and gauze in the other. For a moment, he thought she had forgotten her books, but then realized she had a volume on her head. Nanao raised an eyebrow at him and carefully set both trays on the table by the door before retrieving her book and setting it aside. “You may want to visit your old friend but you are the captain commander of Soul Society. I cannot condone such actions until more of your wounds have heal- And what are you laughing about?” Shunsui chuckled into his hand. “You do realize your book won’t run away if you take two trips, right?”
She narrowed her eyes at him. “If I took two trips, would you still be in my room where you insist on staying if you aren’t allowed to visit Ukitake-san?”
“It’s nicer here,” he explained, eyes still glinting with amusement.
“That is a big lie, and you know it,” she stated after him.
“It is not,” Shunsui pouted, “my room doesn’t have a feminine touch to it. How do you expect me to heal if I don’t have the number one key to rest and recovery?” Nanao pushed her glasses up. “You’re impossible.” She turned and then set his lunch over his papers. “Eat or I will do it for you.” “You will?”
She smirked. “I will shove it down your throat and you will be sent to Fourth Division for choking,” she replied in a demure tone.

Shunsui ducked behind his hat. “Point taken,” he murmured. “I will eat. I really have no reason not to,” he continued, lifting his head with a slow wink in her direction. Nanao flipped open her book. “Your break begins now,” she declared, as she turned a page.
Shunsui smiled and took out his chopsticks. “And they said Retsu was scary.”
“Two minutes wasted.”
The commander only chuckled and started to eat the afternoon meal at his own pace.

Nanao sat at his side, reading her book, and remained quiet until he finished his meal, coughing politely to get his attention. Shunsui set his final bowl down and waited.
She hesitated, hands wrapping around the pages of her manual, and then spoke. “Your time is up, and it’s not just your break, Captain,” she said slowly. She paused again and then stated, “You need to decide about Karakura and forgive yourself for believing Aizen’s illusion. " Her captain sighed and Nanao reached for his hand. "You saved me before he could cause me any harm," she reminded him gently.

Shunsui let out a breath and scratched his head. "Yama-jii would have seen through it. Why release someone that powerful if you already have two other captives?" he elaborated aloud. "It's as he said. We couldn't deny him if he had only brought those two forward, not if he was going to threaten their lives. I should have seen it coming. I knew there was a shape shifter in his army. Even if the Kita 'skin' didn't work, due to time constraints and who we had available for such a switch, falling for that particular trick showed a weakness in my own discipline, and Yamamoto Sensei would have had my head for it." He finished his piece in a fierce voice and let his hand fall over hers.
“I’m only glad that Juushiro was in Karakura when Aizen pulled that stunt. I don’t want him hurting anymore than he already is," he admitted quietly.

“Commander Genryusai would be more likely to beat you for acting like this,” Nanao retorted, pinching his hand more from habit than anything else. She stood. “You know what you did wrong. You even have some solutions. Quit stalling and act like the captain I chose to follow. Everyone makes mistakes. Not everyone can retaliate.”

Shunsui laughed softly. "I suppose you're right," he responded. The commander looked down at his tray, handed it over. and pulled out a few pieces of paper from the collection on his left. He frowned, eyes narrowing slightly, then turned his head towards his fiery lieutenant. "Does that mean I can leave?"
She pushed her glasses up. "Not until those wounds on your back heal. Those are Isane's orders and I am sticking by them. Even if you take after our old Commander, it's no reason to brutalize your body that way."
Shunsui shrugged. "More scars among many. Some zanpakuto demand pain to use their powers," he replied. Then, he winked. "Besides, these are special. They came from protecting my lady faire," he elaborated with a lopsided grin.
Nanao scowled. "Sometimes I wonder if Genryusai hit you on the head too much."
Shunsui laughed loudly then calmed. Still smiling like a rogue, he crooked his finger at her. "I know you're waiting to tend to my bandages," he said with a beckoning look in his eyes. "You can't stay over there forever."

Nanao pushed her glasses up, trying to hide the slight blush forming on her cheeks. “It’s – it’s just a duty,” she sputtered. She squared her shoulders and faced him, holding her book to her chest. “You know, captain, it would be a lot easier if you would keep your hands to yourself while I do this. I don’t need- want the distractions,” she finished in a rush, both cheeks a dusty red.

"Distractions?" he purred, setting his head on his hand. "I don't know what you mean. I stayed completely still." His eyebrows quirked upwards. "I can't help if you find my body to be irresistible though."
Nanao blushed scarlet and then flung the book at his head. "Idiot! You felt up my breast when I dropped the roll of cloth." She ran out of the room.
Shunsui laughed as he lay against the pillows. "Sorry, Nanao-chan, you're too beautiful for me to not touch you at least once." His eyes narrowed on the skylight. "As long as you won't let me have you, these fleeting touches are all I have, especially when I almost lost you." He turned his head to where her book had fallen and reached for it, chuckling as he read a recipe for leek soup. "I'll never give up, Nanao." He turned a few more pages then set it aside.
Groaning and rubbing the large bump on his head, he sat up. "I might as well finish these forms before she comes back. No matter how angry she is, she won't forget they're due." Humming to himself, he started to work.

Nanao did return, only meaning to stay away long enough for her cheeks to cool down. It was not proper to pout. Folding her arms in front of her, she glared down at her superior, who looked up at her sheepishly. Shoulders slumping in defeat, she sighed and walked over to the medical supplies, muttering warnings under her breath. Then she spotted the book set aside.
She paled. He didn't -
"I didn't read it," he murmured quietly with a slight smile.
She rubbed her forehead. "Touch me again, and I will let someone else do this," she annunciated in turn, knowing the truth.
He nodded and chuckled deeply.
Biting her lip to keep her blush at bay, she folded her sleeves back and started to work on his wounds, relaxing fully as her captain began to hum once more.
Why are you so impossible and yet so simple to understand?

"Lull in the Impending Storm": (continued)
Shaking her head, Nanao didn’t even bother checking his own suite of rooms. It was a waste of time when his reiatsu was already brushing against hers from the direction of her own. Stepping into the room with a bowl of water and washcloth, paper and the first aide kit under one arm, she looked over to her captain with a raised eyebrow.
“I think you need to have your head checked, sir. It is not your right to come in here every time you are injured. Your rooms are much- ” “Less feminine,” Shunsui finished, voice a soft purr. Nanao huffed. “It’s quite impossible to argue with you on this matter.” She set the supplies down and started to get to work, peeling the kimono back from his wounds, steeling her blush with another spike of worry at all blood crusted to the clothes. “You were out too long,” she muttered, dipping the cloth in the water and cleaning out the large wound on his shoulder. “And Isane will need to see this one.”
“No doubt,” the commander muttered, eyes closed, taking in the lavender wafting from her figure, causing her cheeks to darken again. Thankfully, he distracted her. “Did you get the summons out before I left from the prison?” She nodded once. “I did. Captain Hirako, Captain Kuchiki, and Captain Mutsu should have received your message shortly before or at the same time as the Hell Butterfly messages you sent out. I have asked the guard to alert me if their reply arrives before I am done here.”

Nanao’s face paled and Shunsui’s eyes narrowed as the alarm started pealing out overhead, drowning out all noise as everyone became silent. Sighing, Shunsui rose to his feet, shrugging his kimono back on. Perhaps I should be thankful that the stray only blunted my edge… and didn’t finish the job.
He looked to Nanao and sighed again. “You have your orders, lieutenant. Don’t break them.” She nodded and reached into her kimono to pull out a few syringes. He took them, eyes soft for a moment. And then the fire returned. "Release Tentaikura!" His orders echoed throughout Seireitei as his reiatsu stretched out..... To be continued....

"Dealing with Loss": Nanao sat on the floor of her quarters in the first division, books pulled out around her in different piles. She could only sulk and curse so long before she felt like she was being useless. Urahara wasn't budging. And she wasn't going to cry at such a crucial time. No matter what. She had done that when he - she lifted her head and pulled out another volume, dusting it down - when they told her the captain commander had succumbed to his wounds. Her hand paused, eyes narrowing as her hand started to tremble. She pursed her lips and brushed at the thick book harder. Coughing as dust rose around her.
She snapped her fingers, banishing the dust with Bakudo #1: Sho.
And then returned to her current project, dusting and reorganizing her personal library.

Appearing behind the woman Ara waved a hand in front of himself as the still lingering dust wafted around the room. "You know opening a window would eliminate most to the issue here." He walked over toward the window pushing it open.
The woman turning quickly as she dropped the book to the floor and looked at him. He smiled quaintly at her with a deep bow. "Nanao Ise. I am Ara, God of Nature." he stood and stepped toward her.
"There is no need to be frightened of me. I will do you no harm."

“I’m not afraid of you, Lord Ara,” she murmured, standing. Nanao brushed the dust off her shihakusho and folded her arms before her, bowing.
“Thank you for the assistance with the window. It was too far away for the moment and it won’t help me completely with the dust accumulating on my books. So I focused on them.” She pushed her glasses up. “If I may, I believe you are here for the same reason you visited a certain noble and a captain, and if you are, I am afraid I cannot fulfill that wish.”
