"Rift":Uryu was shaken from the comfort of his sleep, by the chilling screams of his fellow Quincy. He snatched the cross from around his neck and drew his bow. With his footsteps light and his pace quick, Uryu made his way to the Raelin's room. "Raelin?" he called out to her, his bow lighting the dark of the room. He frantically searched for what startled her. "What's wrong?"

Shaking like a leaf caught in a windstorm, Raelin reached out for the light and grabbed his arm, holding it tightly. Tears flowing down her cheeks, her dark red eyes were wide and dazed. She could hardly process everything. She wanted to hide, but she couldn’t. Her pendant was hot underneath her long nightgown, and her hair was plastered to her drenched brow. She was just so far gone under the pain and fear she even forgot how she usually addressed her Quincy companion as she shook her head. “It’s wrong… Uryu… so wrong….” She whimpered in a cracked voice.

Uryru lowered his bow, as its light faded in the room. He looked at her in through the dark of the room. "What is wrong, Raelin? I don't understand." He reached for her, gently wiping away the tears that stained her face. "Slowly now, Raelin." He pushed his glasses along his nose. "What is the matter?"

Breath hitching, Raelin took his advice, breathing and slowly getting over the backlash. She tried to stop crying as she spoke. “There’s something - something terrible has happened - in soul society. So many are dead…. or will be soon. Birds…. flew in … blew up.” She pulled away and covered her mouth. “It’s horrendous... the blood, horror ..... pain, and despair." She gulped. "Even they didn’t deserve this, Uryu."
She cried out as her wings burst forth. Shivering, she clutched her chest and the glowing pendant. "I've never felt it like this. Not even with our war. The balance is so skewed the scream to reverse it is tearing me up. Uryu..."

Uryu pushed his frames along his nose, as he sat next to Raelin. He placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Then...Let us not stay hidden in this time of crisis. If what you say is true, Raelin, the Soul Society will need all the assistance they can get." His cross glowed in his hand. "We will go and help where we can." He looked to his fellow Quincy. "If you are up to it."

She nodded. “I have to be,” she stated. She blushed. “But I hardly have any energy for getting dressed. I’m sorry, Ishida-san.” She set a hand to her cooling forehead, clenching her free hand to try to calm her tremors. “Can we go there on our own?”

Uryu nodded. "We can." He placed the cross back around his neck as he rose from the edge of the bed. He extended his hand to Raelin. "If you want to wait, until you have gathered your strength, we can."

She shook her head. “I can’t. The calling will only get worse.” She slid off the bed and took his hand, her wings fanned out behind her to help with her balance. Leaning on Ishida, they made their way to the balcony. Raelin formed a gate of light, through which they disappeared.

"Water and Angels":The mornings were quiet, with their apartment complex being mostly empty, the tenants gone to work or classes at the nearby university. And even if people were still around, she knew if anyone was looking in this direction. Feeling a sense of clearness in the late summer breeze, she took off her swimming cap. Letting her white hair spill down her back, Raelin dove into the water. Her pendant gleamed on her chest as she swam to the bottom and then turned around, looking through the screen of rippling water to the surface as she floated through the pool.
Months had passed, and finally, she was starting to relax again. After the horrific attack on Soul Society, Raelin had missed classes for two weeks, sleeping or healing. When her wings returned, she’d leaned on Ishida for another few weeks. She’d almost been afraid that her powers would be required again, a third time, but they hadn’t.
Rolling back over, she kicked back up to the surface, watching the sun glisten on the waves. It echoed of balance. Peace. And she felt safe. She spun around and started swimming laps.

Uryu watched from the edge of the pool, his feet in the water. He pushed his glasses along his nose and smiled. "You seem more at ease now, than you have been for quite some time." Uryu smiled warmly, only for a moment. He was happy to see her health and spirit improve. He removed his glasses slid off the pool's edge, into the water. Brushing the wet hair back and off his face, Uryu looked to see Raelin swimming toward him.

Raelin’s head rose above the water, and seeing the smile lingering in his blue eyes, smiled in return. She reached up and caressed his cheek. “I’m not the only one happy,” she whispered, daringly. It wasn’t something she would usually say, but then again, she was different in the water, less reserved. Suddenly, Uryu leapt back as she splashed him and ducked back under the water.

Uryu wiped the water from his face before taking a dramatic breathe. He submerged himself and looked to Raelin with a playfully angry eye. He swam toward her, latching onto her when he got close enough. "Now, what was that for?" he asked, once they surfaced. With one hand resting on Raelin's hip, Uryu gentle moved strands of hair from her face. "If I had my glasses on, I would push them as I look at you questioningly. So, pretend they are there."

Raelin giggled quietly. “I suppose if you are going to be serious,” she murmured, “I will give you a reason.” She leaned closer to him, setting a hand on his shoulder. “It’s a beautiful day, and water is a playful element,” she continued in a soft undertone. She pulled back slightly, amusement in her eyes. “You were being too still. It provoked me.”

"Provoked you?" Uryu smiled slyly. "I don't see how I provoked you by merely entering the water." With his hand still resting on her hip, Uryu submerged himself again taking Raelin with him. Keeping the playful angel close, Uryu pulled her close and gave a gentle kiss.

Surprised, Raelin gave a radiant smile before kissing Uryu back, keeping him close as she ran a hand up through his hair. The echo of her heart blended with the whispering of the shifting water. Uryu’s hand on her hip tightened before they rose up for air.
As the chorus of the lively world filled their ears, Raelin hesitated and then rested her head on his chest, not quite able to keep her face clear of emotion, listening to Uryu's heart.
