Kairo chuckled as his lieutenant left the room, threading a hand through his hair. "She has a lot of good words to say about grief after surviving what happened to Kaien-san," he murmured. As Tsukiro remained silent, he turned to his captain. "I didn't know the lieutenant was expecting a kid."

Juushiro nodded. "He had just found out and told me the secret in confidence." He folded his hands over his lukewarm cup of tea. "This was supposed to be her last mission and routine at that. The hollow her team had been ordered to kill wasn't even that powerful, according to our sensors. But fate can be cruel..."
The captain looked up again. "That doesn't mean give up. Trials, burdens, mistakes are all key stepping stones to our true potential, but it doesn't mean you have to find the answers alone, Tsukiro. I would never have conquered my illness as far as I have without those by my side every day."

Suddenly, Tsukiro started chuckling lowly. "I guess I got the Ichigo treatment." He shook his head smiling. "I guess it does work. That Rukia, she really has a way with words." Tsukiro stood up, straightening his uniform and bowing. "Thank you for talking to me. It seems I have a lot to think about. Kairo, I'll catch you later."
Tsukiro bowed once again and turned, walking out the door. With each step his mind went a thousand miles. And with those thoughts came all of the memories he held with his family. The good and the bad.

As Kairo rose, thinking he should go with him, Juushiro raised his hand, stopping him. "Let him go for now," he said gently, "but keep an eye on him. That is what you should do at this point. Right now, he has to think on his own." He looked on as Tsukiro continued walking away.

Kairo nodded before cupping his hands around his mouth. "IF YOU DON"T SNAP OUT OF IT SOON I WILL LEARN MY BANKAI JUST TO PUMMEL YOU!" he hollered. He smiled as Tsukiro waved before vanishing. He sat down again. "Thank you for this, Captain. I know you were the one who convinced Lieutenant to talk to him."

Juushiro chuckled and inclined his head, admitting to it, before sipping at his lukewarm tea. "If it accomplishes what is needed, if that boy no longer seeks out sorrow and suffering, then that is all the gratitude she or I need." He finished his tea and reached into his sleeve, pulling out a small medical packet. Ripping it open, he tipped the contents into his empty cup, reaching for the kettle.
Kairo quickly picked it up and stood, marching over to the small oven to prepare the water. When he had returned, he poured the steaming water over the herbs.
Juushiro nodded his thanks and sipped at the bitter herbs.
Halfway, he set his cup down. "Kairo, I can tell you have a question. Ask it."

Kairo chuckled and drummed his fingers on his folded arm. Finally he relented and leaned forward. "Captain, was it wrong of us, Urahara, Yoruichi Sensei, Soi Fong, Kaori, and myself, for us to have not tried to break him from this train of thought before? Some of what you said and what the lieutenant said ...."
"Some I am sure he has heard before," Juushiro replied before he could finish his thought.

Juushiro sipped his tea again. "And some, he didn't need to hear yet," he murmured.
"I don't understand."
"Your friend had found a way to balance himself, and until Aizen appeared again and he wanted to reach higher than before, it was a feasible answer," he chuckled, "if he didn't want to grow further."
The captain finished his tea. "If there wasn't some truth in how he has been living so far, then he would have never conquered his Bankai. Zanpakuto refuse to give that power to their masters until they are, in some fashion, ready."
Kairo frowned, sipping his own tea. "But how is blaming himself-"
"I am not sure it was blaming himself or his stubborn search for revenge that held him up," Juushiro interrupted again, "but for whatever actual reason it was, Ashimitsu was able to move past that loss through those two things." He smiled gently. "But those feelings could not sustain him indefinitely. They were crutches, not the actual answer. They were what the boy needed to survive for his family, but if he still wants to become a captain, he has to face the difficult reality before him. What is his true answer?" He looked outside again. "I hope for both his sake and ours he does find his truth. Soul Society needs him."
Kairo nodded, digesting this. "What about you, Captain? Why didn't the illness that constantly wars with your body not win?"
Juushiro's smile grew and he folded another tea bag, revealing a flower. "I have too much to live for to die. It is as simple as that."

"To Retrieve...."

"Back to a Harder Time":The garguanta opened in the center of the thirteenth division an alarm sounding all around as Ilian stepped out, hands deep in his pockets of his new Ayakashi uniform. He looked around for the Captain that was explained to him as he grabbed a nearby Soul Reaper that tried to attack him. He jerked him forward, looking into his eyes.
"I am looking for a Captain Ukitake. Can you point me his way?"
He soul reaper lifted his shaky hand and pointed out the division gates.
"Thanks," Ilian told him tossing him aside like a rag doll as he walked toward the gate to go find his target.

Juushiro was outside the gates with Rukia as he laid out instructions and she directed his division in repairing the damage of the raid. A hush reached him on his left and he drew his blade as the new hollow sauntered towards him.
“Are you Captain Ukitake?” the youth muttered, hands in his pockets.
Juushiro’s eyes narrowed. This one was new, and he could feel a well of energy behind his laid-back form. The uniform he wore was black, different than the espada. Why? He doubted the timing was coincidental.
Biting back the familiar catch in his throat, Juushiro prepared a kido in his mind. “I am he,” he replied, motioning Rukia backwards with his opposite hand “What does Tervaden want this time?”
All he had to do was delay it before the alarm brought back up.

Ilian tilted his head to one side as he looked at the captain, ignoring his question. Reaching behind him he revealed a small blade no longer then his forearm. The fuller and central ridge hollowed out creating two blades that attached to the pommel. The hilt a blood red with a sliver pommel and cross-guard.
"Restrict..." Ilian spoke softly, his blade disappearing as he still stepped toward the white-haired captain. "You don't look like much; and here I believed the Bat about you being almighty powerful. Maybe I should have taken on both jobs and paid homage in the human realm as well." He chuckled as a smirk appeared across his lips. "I heard that broad that lives there has the powers of a Goddess. I think she would have been more fun to play with. Not to mention I am sure she is a hell of lot better looking."
His arms came up as he shrugged his shoulders. Just then, as Ilian stepped closer to the captain, two of his men charged Ilian. Extending his arms, Ilian only touched the two mens shoulders pushing them away like swatting at flies. The men quickly started regressing in age, until they were infants laying on the ground, engulfed in their uniforms. Soon they disappeared into nothingness.
"What are you, old man? About five, six hundred years old?"

Juushiro’s eyes sharpened. He has the power of aging backwards. I’ll have to be careful. His eyes narrowed as he dodged the first attempt from espada to touch him and registered who he was talking about. “I won’t let you or your masters harm that woman again.” Coming closer, he erected a Danku wall and pulled more of his men from his reach. “Raiko Taihou!”
At Juushiro’s command, a giant blast of dark violet energy, the combination of two spells, snatched the espada and erupted into a blaze, forming a deep crater around its blast point. Another Danku wall broke from around the captain and his subordinates. “All of you, keep away from this one. Use Kido from afar.” They nodded fearfully. “Rukia, direct them.” She nodded.
Juushiro approached the slowly dying blast. His mind could sense the life force fighting inside it. Drawing his zanpakuto, he waited. “I am even older than your estimation, espada,” he murmured.

Ilian growled and stood quickly from his crouched position, his arms flinging outward with clenched fist forcing the Kido attack to erupt and explode around him, moving outward taking out a few building, trees and shrubbery. As the Kido energy died around him he dusted his uniform of the debris as he spoke, a slight chuckled in his voice.
"Thanks for that bit of info old man, or should I call you Gramps?"
Ilian disappeared from sight, his voice still heard. "You know you might be a little fun after all. Though I don't have a lot of time to play. Which is a pity." Ilian appeared behind the white haired captain as he spoke softly in his ear from behind. "Because I do so love playing with my victims."
"Bastard!" A female voice behind him rang out. Ilian turned quickly raising his hands, catching Rukia's blade between his palms. He laughed, looking at her, "you won't take long to regress." His foot raised to kick her back as the white haired captain jumped and tackled her to the ground.

Juushiro raised himself off Rukia and threw out a Kido ball, forcing the espada back before it disintegrated in his hand. “Stay back, Lieutenant,” Juushiro shouted. “That’s an order.” He refused to lose any more of his people because he was a target. He would not let it happen.
“You really would be fun,” the boy laughed, waving his hand. “Too bad.”
Juushiro dodged and shunpo'ed away. Erecting another kido wall as the boy followed him, he drew his blade, slashing it swiftly at the espada. “What do you want with me, espada?” he asked.
“That’s rude,” the boy said, skipping from side to side, avoiding him. “The espada are below us. We’re the Ayakashi.”
Silently, Juushiro set off another Kido blast.
The youth vanished, appearing behind him. “You really can shoot those fast, but I wonder how long that will last.”
Juushiro’s eyes narrowed in reply, spinning around in a blur and cutting him down his chest. His mouth hardened as he fought back a cough.

Ilian laughed, "just as I thought. A little longer and you will be right where I want you." A wicked smile crossed his lips as his arms came up and spread out wide. As the white haired captain watched Ilian regenerated before him.
Taking the edges of his jacket he looked down shaking his head as two cut marks were apparent, one lower and one higher. "Tisk tisk, it seems I am going to be needing a new jacket thanks to you, and I have not even had this for one full day." He looked at Juushiro. "Glad they are black and don't show blood all that well."
He paused and looked at his jacket again, then quickly back at the captain as he spoke quickly, moving forward, the Ayakashi's yellow eyes now glowing an eery gold.
"Shall we finish this?!"
Ilian reached forward to palm Juushiro's head as he dodged his reach. "Come on Gramps. I ain't got all day. My brother is waiting on me. I am sure he's done with the Miyamoto's by now. Hell their only weak humans after all."
Ilian tried to grab the captain again as he dodged once more. Ilian growled narrowing his eyes.
