Suzume's eyes narrowed and she pushed in front to the small space between her tall captain and the desk before he could gloat. "Yes, I can," she stated. She bowed again. "A pleasure working with you, Captain Hitsugaya. Where do you want me?"

Shinji chuckled at his fifth seat's audacity to get in his way then turned away from the short captain's desk. "I'll think of some way you can repay me later," he called out, waving over his shoulder. He threw the doors open again and started shouting at the eavesdroppers, clearing the pathway with his loud nasal voice.

Hitsugaya sighed and looked up at Suzume. "Well, we'd better get to work." He pointed to Rangiku's desk, piled high with paperwork. "You can take a stack from there and work at the coffee table near the couches, that way you'll have some room. Pens should still be in her desk drawers, since I put them there and she probably hasn't touched her desk in months. Get as much done as you can without draining yourself completely. We'll stop for break in two hours. Good luck."

"Yes, sir!" Suzume said after him, standing to attention before going to Rangiku's desk. Giggling, she looked at it for a few moments before pushing the whole lot on the ground.
"What are you doing?!" Hitsugaya said, standing up and gaping.
Suzume turned, bowed, then sprang back up. "It's easier for me like this. Don't worry, it will be done." She rummaged in the drawers for a few minutes, setting bottles of liquor on top and then placing the pens on the other side.
As Hitsugaya groaned behind her, she turned. "Captain?" she asked.
"Get rid of it," he muttered, rubbing his temples. "I swear she's-"
He looked up and blinked, finding his office empty, but a moment later, the door opened again and Suzume walked in. She giggled at his dumb-founded expression. "I did as you asked."
"That was fast."
She nodded. "It was in my way," she explained. She skipped over to the piles of paperwork and plopped down on the ground, grabbing a bunch and setting them on her lap. She started humming as she sorted the mess into a pile on her other side.

Hitsugaya stared at her for a few minutes, gaping at her. He blinked repeatedly. After a while, she turned and looked at him with a puzzled expression. She asked if he was okay, to which he only nodded slowly. She smiled and went back to work. He let his head fall to his desk once again with a quiet thunk.
I must attract the strange ones...
When he lifted his head up to look at her again, she had almost ten pages done. He gasped and his jaw dropped. Again she turned to him.
"Are you sure you're okay?"
"Peachy..." he said, then blinked and went back to his own work, scribbling across the page like mad.
Don't complain! You finally found someone who can get things done! Don't complain and just let her work!

Suzume continued to work quietly, humming on and off, as she sorted through the mounds of paperwork Rangiku had left on her desk. Completely oblivious to Hitsugaya's confusiou, she giggled to herself, wondering where her friend was hiding this time. A pile leaned to the side, but she pushed it back before it could fall then cut it in half.
Leaving half on the floor, she rose, walking to the desk and opened a pen, starting to fill that set out. She paused, uncertain about something, and walked out of the room, searching for the filing room.

Hitsugaya heard the door open and close. He looked up, seeing the room was empty. He looked around frantically, part of him panicking that she had run off and bailed out on him.
"Miss Shizuka?" When he heard no response he groaned and collapsed on his desk. "I knew it. I knew it was too good to be true."
Suddenly a thought crossed his mind. She was from Squad Five, and had likely never been in his barracks. And as clumsy as she was...
He leaped up and ran out the room. "Just my luck that she would go and get herself lost!"

Just then, a high-pitched scream was heard. Hitsugaya flashed to the source, threw open the filing room, and stood there, flabbergasted. Suzume was on the ground, two broken bottles near her, with one hand holding one section of the filing cabinet up and another one on a pile of papers she had pulled out, keeping them from falling into the broken glass and the puddle of liquor.
She spied Hitsugaya and widened her eyes. "Help...." she whimpered, arms straining.

Hitsugaya leaped over the mess of liquor and broken glass. He took the papers out of her hand and stuffed them in his haori. Then, together the two of them pushed the leaning cabinet back upright. She sighed in relief and placed her hands over her heart. He lifted her up suddenly and carried her over the mess of broken glass.
"What in the world were you trying to do?" He asked as he grabbed a broom and dust pan. He placed his hand over the mess and released his reiatsu, freezing the liquid. Then he flipped the broom and smashed the ice with the broom handle, breaking it up. He swept up the ice along with the glass, tossing everything in the trash. He turned back to her. "Why didn't you ask me for help before you walked out of the room?"
His voice wasn't angry and irritated as one might have expected from him. Instead it was confused and concerned.

Suzume broke out her carried-out-of-danger trance and bowed hurriedly, hiding her burning blush. "But you looked so busy. I didn't want to disturb you. Surely someone else could direct me to the filing room, and from there," Hitsugaya put an arm on her shoulder to stop her bowing, and she giggled, "I saw more bottles of liquor and thought I would remove them." She tilted her head, pushing her glasses up. "I tripped on something and found myself in the situation you found me in. I couldn't do anything, not unless I wanted to lose the precious paperwork."

Hitsugaya's eyes widened at her, his mouth open. When her words sank in, he sighed and placed his hands on her shoulders and looked into her eyes sternly. "Suzume, you could have stepped in that glass. Or worse, that cabinet could have fallen on you. Yes, our work is important, but paperwork is never worth getting yourself hurt over. Do you understand? Next time something like that happens, never mind your work, make sure you're safe first. We can worry about the paperwork later. Kyoraku isn't going to have an ulcer if he doesn't get it on time. Most of this junk is months late already, no thanks to my lieutenant." He shook his head at the thought of Rangiku then turned back to Suzume. "But anyway, think of yourself first. Alright?"

Suzume tilted her head, as if she didn't understand what he said, then smiled. "Yes sir. Think of what I like first, yes sir. I can do that." She giggled. "Does that mean stop looking for liquor?"
"Wha- When did I tell you start looking for that?"
"When you told me to get rid of it," she replied, as if it was obvious.
Hitsugaya sighed. "I meant remove the liquor from her drawers. You don't have to keep looking, and besides," he rolled his eyes, "if you're going to search the whole barracks, it might not all be hers."
"Search the whole barracks?" she repeated.
"Wha- NO!" Hitsugaya growled. He rubbed his temples. Looks like he would have to spell it out for her. He placed his hands on her shoulders again. "Just help me with the paperwork, but don't put paperwork before your own safety, okay?" he said slowly.
Suzume smiled. "Of course sir. Stay away from alcohol and do paperwork." She tilted her head again. "Does a paper-cut count as hurting myself?" she asked in the same tone as before.

Hitsugaya sighed and shook his head. "Only if it's so bad you could get hospitalized for it. But otherwise, no." Just then he wondered if she misunderstood that just now. So instead he said. "How about this. Just follow my orders to a T. Word for word. If I don't say it SPECIFICALLY, don't do it. And right now, what I want you to do is help me with the paperwork. If you need ANYTHING, ask me. Okay?"
She nodded with a smile. He had to admit, her smile was kind of adorable. He shook his head again and squeezed the bridge of his nose. With his other hand he gestured out the door. "After you."

Suzume nodded and turned around, skipping to the entrance. She looked both ways and then back at him, pulling at the string on her shirt. "I think I'm lost now," she admitted shyly.

Hitsugaya sighed then chuckled. He gently pushed her down the right hallway. "This way. Let's go."
"Right," she smiled and let him lead her.
At least she tries...
