Yumiko smiled widely, pleased that the first question was something she could answer with ease. “It depends on the aptitude of the class as a whole and those that won’t be too dangerous to practice here. Some of you may be more inclined towards offensive spells, Hado, and some may find the shields, barriers and communication spells, Bakudo, easier.” She paused. “And if enough of you survive Yumichika Ayasegawa’s class, he and I will be teaching you how to combine kido and zanjutsu to those who wish it.”
She paused. “Kido is about balance, and each person has a different flow with it. This class will help you find your own so it will best serve you later.” She fell silent, still smiling.
But the next question dampened her confidence.
“Did you really go with Aizen willingly because you hated your family?”
Glad her hands were hidden again in her sleeves, Yumiko faced the speaker. “He would have liked me to think that,” she murmured, “but that is not the same as the truth.”

Makino could not take it. This woman was standing there acting as if she had nothing to do with the takeover. It sickened her. Makino stood as she was quickly jerked back into her sitting position. "Not even!" Mitsuo muttered softly.
She turned and slapped Mitsuo for pulling her back to her sitting position. "I am leaving! Let go!" Makino grumbled back at him.
She watched his hand shoot forward to grab her again as she went to stand once more. "Seki," Makino whispered.
Mitsuo's hand bounced off the shield as he fell over in a heap and unable to move. "DAMN IT MAKI-CHAN!!" He bellowed disrupting class as all eyes turned to them.
Makino looked around her her eyes landing on Yumiko. She shook her head turned and walked toward the exit.

Riku leaped up and ran after Makino. "Makino, wait! Why don't you just ask her? That was the point of this session. If you want answers, get them." Riku shunpo'ed in front of her and placed his hands on her shoulders. "Being angry forever will only make things worse. I'm not saying forgive her or forget what she did, but holding onto your anger is dangerous. Let yourself use this opportunity to take a step towards closure. The truth may hurt, but eventually you'll be happy you got it. I'm sure of that."

Makino got in Riku's face as Makino's arm shoot up and pointed back at Yumiko. "And what if she tells me she did!? What if she tells me she killed my father!? HUH?! Can you stop me?!" Riku looked at her daunted.
Makino spun and looked at the class, her arms out wide. "Can any of you stop me if I attacked her?!"
Her head quickly jerked the direction Yumiko was standing when she move toward her. Makino shook her head at her in warning her eyes where narrowed to slits.

Yumiko halted, watching the dark eyes flare in rage and pain, and sighed. She lowered her head and reached for her blade. The young woman and some others hissed, but Yumiko kept her head bowed. She withdrew her weapon, holding it sheathed in front of her.
“This is Mizue no Kagami. She is a water-based zanpakuto that can reflect the powers of any zanpakuto within a certain radius. Her power is only equaled to the power of the actual blade. When I was barely old enough to marry, I reflected the power of Yamamoto Genryusai’s zanpakuto at a party, nearly killing my brother and nearly setting fire to half of the noble district. That was the reason Sousuke Aizen sought me out.” She halted, taking a breath, letting them dwell on that which she would say. “When I fell to the powers of Las Noches, I stayed in its shadows. I had no part in the takeover of Soul Society. I rarely saw any but those of Las Noches.” She returned her zanpakuto to her belt and looked to the young woman in front of her.
“Does that answer your question? Or do you still want to fight me?”

"Your word, and the truth are two different things!" Makino growled stepping quickly toward her as she was grabbed by the recovered Mitsuo. He linked his arms under hers and locked his fingers behind her neck.
"Makino! Stop this!" He barked at her as she struggled in his hold. "You're not getting away from me! So stop it!"
Makino grinned and dropped to her knees flipping Mitsuo over her head. She stood quickly over the top of him looking down at him, his looked dazed from being thrown. Makino lifted her hand and pointed it at Mitsuo tears coursed down her cheeks.
"Disintegrate, you black dog of Rondanini!! Look upon yourself with horror and then claw out your own--"

As some of the students sprang up or cried out in fear, Juushiro shunpo'ed from his hidden position and covered Tori-san's eyes. She froze as his power seized her in a firm grip. "That's enough, Tori-san. Inemuri." He caught her as she passed out and her friend whirled around, eyes wide in bewilderment And he was not the only one.
He closed his eyes and stood tall. "Calm down, please. Ryouma nor I would allow a student to harm another in these walls. And your fellow student only wanted to stop her friend. It was not a lethal attack." He shook his head slowly. "The fact that you expected something that would hurt you from someone that should be your friend is proof of the perilous times we have lived in and how scarce true trust is now." He closed his eyes. "That is a sad thing."
Silence greeted his announcement.
"Class is dismissed. You will resume this session next time."

Mitsuo rubbed the back of his neck as he looked to the ground. "Sorry Captain Ukitake." He looked to Yumiko. "Sorry Miss Ryouma. I tried to stop her without too much force," he chuckled softly as he looked to Makino. "But she is a strong one. That century of training paid off well for her. She should go into the Eleventh Division instead of the Fifth. She would do them proud."
He chuckled again looking to Yumiko as she stepped up next to him. "I am really sorry, but she is hell bent on finding her fathers killer and she believes it you." He looked back to Juushiro. "Will she..." he sighed rubbing the back of his neck again. "I am sure she is in a lot of trouble, huh?"

Captain Ukitake sighed once more as the kids started to filter out around himself, his daughter and a few remaining students. They were probably all friends. “Yes, she is, but I am not at liberty to say how much. And I understand her sentiments. However, in her search for justice, it would be too easy to cross over into something else. That is what I am trying to prevent.”
He paused. “Do you know where she is rooming?”
The young man nodded.
“Then can I trust you to return her to her room safely?”
“Of course, Captain Ukitake.”
The captain nodded and carefully slipped Tori-san into his arms, folding her own. He set two candy bars on top. “Away with you. Leave me alone with your teacher.” Mitsuo nodded. "And you may consider more than Kenpachi's division with your stubbornness towards friends. It will serve you well and others more so in other places, too." He waved his hand.

"Thank you Captain Ukitake." Mitsuo bowed to the Captain then to Yumiko. "Again I apologize Miss Ryouma." She smiled warmly at him and patted his shoulder as he walked over to the still snoozing Etsuya in the grass.
He bumped him with the side of his foot. "Dude get up." When he did not move he tapped him again. "Come on Etsuya, parties over. Time to go."
Etsuya started to stretch out on the grass with a wide yawn as the book fell from over his face and his groggy eyes looked up at him. Mitsuo motioned with his head. "Come on. Class is over for the day."
As Etsuya started to sit up Mitsuo looked back over at the captain and Yumiko. They were talking quietly, which worried Mitsuo. He looked at the sleeping Makino in his arms. "You're in a shit ton of trouble girl and no one is going to be able to save your ass." He spoke softly to her then looked back to Etsuya as he stood in front of him.

Etsuya stretched and yawned louder. "I'm up. I'm up." He tucked his book into his waistband, as he scratched his head. Glancing over, he saw the Captain's conversing. "Wonderful." As he shook his head, he looked to the limp Makino in Mitsou's arms.
"Boy am I glad I was sleeping."

Mitsuo rolled his eyes with a hopeless sigh at Etsuya. "To bad there is not a Division for lazy perverted bastards. That would be the perfect place for you, Etsuya." He turned and started walking away from him as Etsuya quickly caught up with him.
"I take offense to that statement I'll have you know, Mitsuo."
"Take it however you want, Etsuya. You're not any better than the rest of us to not pay attention in class." He looked at Etsuya from the corner of his eye as they walked. "Look, I have to take Maki-chan to her room. I think I am going to stick around with her until she wakes." He turned and started a new path toward the dorms. "I will catch you later around campus."
Mitsuo kept walking even after Etsuya stopped where he left him. "Go take a nap until your next class or find a hot chick to chase around. That should keep you busy until your next class starts." He heard Etsuya chuckle as he then disappeared from the area. Mitsuo looked down at Makino in his arms and sighed as he continued his path to her dorm room.

As the double doors closed, Juushiro sighed and reached over to set a hand on his daughter’s shoulder. “I am sorry, Yumiko, that this was as nearly as bad as we feared it could get, but leaving yourself open to an attack will not help anyone’s wounds heal. No matter what they believe, shedding your blood will not give them closure.”
He tucked a lock of hair back behind her ear. “You told them the right thing. And we both know you didn’t take any lives in the recent war.”
She had fallen silent. "Yumiko?"

“I may not have,” Yumiko whispered, “but am I any different than someone who meant to? If they knew the truth?” She looked towards the opposite end of the field. “If they knew the two who most likely did are very important to me. If I am still waiting for one of their criminals? Not to kill him? But to tell him I love him again….” She closed her eyes, masking the pain of that statement.
“Then, they wouldn’t want to learn from me. Even if I want to help because I don’t want so many to be hurt.”
She lowered her head. “I miss him so much. He cut me free of him because he though he’d lost to someone else and that I would wither in his world. But…. even if I’ve found so much that I lost because of that…. it’s not enough….”
She leaned against her teacher, protector, and father figure, hiding her face in his shoulder. “It’s not enough….”

Juushiro stroked her hair. “Let’s go back to the house for today. You’ve done your best and the class is done.” As Yumiko nodded, he turned them both towards the double doors, before changing his mind and heading towards the back door at the end of the field. Yumiko continued to lean against him. He sighed. It was as if the three years hadn’t happened. A year and a half with no word from him and his daughter was still pining for Vale Tervaden. She had just learned to hide it better. He hoped… it wasn’t in vain. “You can only wait, Yumi. Wait until you see him again to know if the love faded in his heart or yours. Or if it is something as special as you hope it is.”
