Kita giggled, shaking her head. “You’re never living that one down. Jinta has a talent for making things stick, doesn’t he?” She smiled teasingly. “But hey, at least you’ll always have a unique nickname, right?”
Renji groaned dramatically, rolling his eyes again. “Yeah, lucky me.”
Their conversation drifted into a comfortable silence as they continued their walk through Seireitei. The familiar sights passed by, but Kita barely noticed them, her thoughts split between the peace of walking with Renji and the weight of what she still had to face. Renji, too, seemed lost in thought, his expression light but his eyes holding something deeper.
When they reached the Senkaimon, both paused. The large, towering structure stood before them, and the air around it hummed with energy. Renji turned to her, his signature grin appearing, though his eyes softened. “Alright, this is where I head out. You take care of yourself, Kita. And seriously, if you need anything, just holler.”
Kita smiled, nodding. “I will. You too, Renji. And don’t worry, you’re not getting rid of me that easily.”
Renji laughed and gave her a mock salute. “Good to know.” With that, he took one step and was gone.
Kita stood still for a moment, her eyes lingering on the spot where Renji had been. The quiet returned, but it wasn’t as heavy as before. She glanced across the street, her gaze locking onto the entrance of the Second Division. Her chest tightened with hesitation, but this time, she wasn’t going to let it stop her.
Taking a deep breath, she straightened her shoulders and started walking. It was time to talk to Tsukiro. She crossed the street, each step carrying her closer to a conversation she’d been avoiding for too long.
