“Wrong Turn”:
It was the third day of their lock down and some of the kids were complaining they needed to get into the market place to buy food and personal items. Makino was one of them. It seemed when Sayako was moved out of the room she took a few items that were not hers. Makino did not care either way. They were nothing of importance. Only shampoo, soap and a few items of food, but it did leave her without some things she needed. Food for one. Being granted a pass and of course an escort, Makino and a small group of her fellow students went out shopping for things for themselves, food wise and personal.
They were granted one hour to get what they needed. So once in the market place the group of six, spread out to get what they needed. Their escort perched to one of the buildings near by watching things closely. Disappearing into one of the shops Makino went about her shopping making it as quickly as possible. Luckily she was able to get everything there. All, but one thing and it was something she desperately needed. However, the merchant was kind enough to tell here where she could acquirer what she needed. Leaving the shop she headed the way the man informed her. It was not far from where they were doing their shopping and it was only going to take a second.
As she walked along to the shop suddenly a young child started to cry for their mother. She looked around seeing a young boy standing in the middle of the street. She went to his side kneeling down in front of him, placing her bag beside her. She rested her hands to his arms.
“It’s alright. Don’t cry. I am sure your mother is close.”
“I don’t know where she went. I turned around to look at something and when I turned back around she was gone.” The young boy told her.
“I am Makino,” she told him drying his tears and taking one of his hands as she stood. She picked up her bag and looked at him. “What’s your name?”
“Hiro,” the young boy told her still wiping tears away.
“Well then Hiro; let’s go find your mother. I am sure she is looking for you as well.”
First the two looked around the streets hoping to see a mother looking for a lost child. When they did not she started checking the shops. Finally, after the third shop a mother rushed up to them.
“There you are, Hiro!” the mother exclaimed dropping to her knees and wrapping her arms around the young boy.
You could tell she was frantic from looking for him.
“Thank you. Thank you so much.” She told Makino as she stood from kneeling in front of her son, tears in her eyes.
Makino smiled warmly at her and patted Hiro on top of the head. “It was a pleasure. He is a very good boy.”
His mother nodded with a warm smile as she looked down to her son. “I normally leave him at home with his older sister when I come to the market, but his older sister disappeared the other day.”
“Disappeared?” Makino questioned as she looked from Hiro to his mother. “Did you report it to the Gotei?”
The mother nodded slowly. “Yes. We know she did not run away, so we reported it as soon as she did not return home after studying with her friends.”
“So she was out late?” Makino asked making the mother nod slowly again. “Did her friends see anything?”
The mother then shook her head, “nothing out of the ordinary. Momo, her girlfriend she was walking with has disappeared as well. The other girl they were walking with said the only thing they saw on the entire walk was a small white Persian kitten.”
Makino eyes widened as she back away dropping her bag. “A…a…ki…kitten?”
The mother reached for Makino to steady her as Hiro started picking up Makino’s spilled items. “Are you alright, Maki-chan?” Hiro asked her as he handed her the bag.
Still in a daze Makino looked to him and took the bag. As she looked into his soft innocent brown eyes she started to snap out of it. She shook her head quickly and looked back to the mother. “Who did you speak to in the Gotei about this?”
“One of the Seated officers in the Sixth Division, his name was…” the mother paused for a second. “Fifth Seat Nagano. Yorusuke Nagano. Yes that was him.”
Makino shook her head quickly as she looked to Hiro then back to his mother. “I have to go. I am glad I could help you find your son, but I really need to be going. I have to get back to the Academy.” Makino turned quickly and walked as fast as she could back to where they were supposed to meet after shopping.
“Thank you again,” the woman called out to her.
“Be safe Maki-chan!” Hiro called out to her next.
She was so shaken by what Hiro’s mother told her about her daughter and her friend, she did not really hear them and she had completely forgotten what is was she went for that caused her to be over that way.
