Ryo put her arms into the sleeves of her haori. She remained silent as she led Ashimitsu.
"Captain Hirabayashi? You can't tell me before hand?" asked Ashimitsu.
Suddenly, Ryo stopped with Tsukiro on her heels. She turned around as he bumped into her.
"I'm sorry, Captain. I -" Ryo flashed stepped behind Tsukiro, sliding his zanpaukto from his obi. "What are you doing?"
"Tell me about your parents, Ashimitsu." she said in low voice, tucking his zanpaukto beneath her obi.

Tsukiro's eyes widened to double their size at the captain's words. He couldn't speak, only stand there with his mouth open. She only stood there, waiting. Eventually he closed his mouth and turned his head away, his eyes somber and sorrowful. "What's there to tell? My mother was killed along with my brother and my father has been suicidal ever since but is too prideful to do it himself. I'm sure you've been told the story, so why should I repeat it?"

Ryo pulled her arms from her haori and turned back the way the came. "Fine. Be stubborn, boy." She began to walk away.

Tsukiro blinked at her as she walked away. He then walked quickly to catch up to her. "That's it? You're not going to force the issue? Push me to talk? You're just going to drop it? Just like that?"

"If you don't want to talk about it, I can't force you." she replied as she walked at a steady pace. "I am simply going to report that you are still not ready for the position of Captain."
Ryo quickened her pace, leaving Tsukiro behind.

Again, Tsukiro caught up. He glared at her back. "That's blackmail! That's not how you get someone to talk about their issues!" Again, she said nothing. He growled and shunpo'd in front of her, forcing her to stop. He glared at her, his gaze connecting with hers. "Now look. You may be here to train me mentally to be a captain, but you won't get anything accomplished like that, especially with me. You don't just tell someone to talk and hope they do, and if not, oh well. If that's how you're going to be then this will be a big waste of time. If you want to get through to me, start thinking more like a mentor and less like a stuck up, hair up your ass captain. I'll talk when I'm ready, not when you ask me to."
Tsukiro stepped aside and crossed his arms. "Now. Where are we going?"

"I am not here to mentor you. I am to evaluate you and report whether or not I believe you are ready to be Captain. You do not and will not dictate the rules of this evaluation, Third Seat Ashimitsu. When I ask you a question, I expect an answer. And, a swift one. Even if it something you do not want to speak on, if I ask you about it you will tell me. Understand?"

Tsukiro narrowed her eyes at her further. "You're exactly the kind of captain I despise and will never be." He turned and walked off, not caring if he was going the right direction or not. "Leadership is not about giving orders and expecting your subordinates to obey them. It's about respecting them just as much as they respect you, and supporting them just as much as they support you. It's about mutual trust and strong relationships. That is what allows a group of people to perform smoothly and effectively. The point of this, in my eye, is to train my mind so that my actions and emotions do not inhibit me from accomplishing that as a captain. And if you can't help me with that, then I'll be requesting that Captain Kyoraku change the captain assigned to all of this. You're only going to set me backwards, and I don't plan on letting that happen."

"Let me help you understand something, Third Seat Ashimitsu. I am not here to mentor or befriend you. I am not here to take orders from you. I am a Captain. And, if I were any other Captain, you would never obtain this position, simply based on how you are speaking to me now. If you want to hang yourself, fine. I will give you the rope. If not, shut up and listen." Ryo turned towards Ashimitsu and smiled.
"Now, when I ask something of you, you will give me what I ask for. So, let's try this again. Tell me about your parents."

Tsukiro stared at her, his eyes burning. Slowly, anger and rage started to bubble up from his feet. He stayed silent, thinking of what to say next. Some very foul tasting words coated his tongue, ready to be spat out in her face. This bitch was going to cost him his goal for moving forward. He despised people like her. Detested them. Snobbish, authority drunk, nose to the sky bureaucrats, all of them. They couldn't see any farther than the tip of their own pointed noses. Yoruichi though. Yoruichi was nothing like that. Nothing like them. (Of course, there were others, like Ukitake, Kyoraku, Hitsugaya and a select few others.) When he had first become a Soul Reaper and witnessed all of the Captains first hand, he had vowed that he would emulate his sensei. He would not stoop to their level. He would not become as short sighted and distasteful as them.
And that's when it hit him. His detest of her kind would only push him the other direction. He thought back on his own words and the reaction it had elicited from her. He knew in that moment that if he showed her his opinions, his true opinions, it would only push him back into the hole he had dug himself all these years. He had to put a cork in it, no matter how much he wanted to spit in her face and tell her to go to hell and rot there for eternity. There was no doubt in his mind that he could prove his capability to Kyoraku himself, but that would take a hell of a lot longer than he had the time for. So in that moment, he reminded himself of how the Gotei Thirteen was designed to run; He wasn't there to give his opinions. He was there to act and cut down any threat that appeared. And at that moment it was Sosuke Aizen for a second time.
He stood there silent, lost in his own thought process. He was quiet for so long that Captain Hirabayashi had repeated herself. He ignored her and finished his train of thought.
He took a deep breath, thinking everything over again then double checking it again. Once he had his game plan, he took another breath, swallowed his pride, then blinked. As he blinked, the fire disappeared, replaced by calm and stoicism.
"... Where do you want me to start? You want me to talk. Alright, fine. We'll do things your way. I'll talk so much you'll have to submit your report to Kyoraku in book form."

Already annoyed and disappointed with Tsukiro's words, Ryo shook her head. "Are you giving me a hard time on purpose, Third Seat Ashimitsu?" asked Ryo as she rubbed her temples. "We have only started and I am already annoyed with you." She looked up to Ashimitsu, his face displaying his distaste for Ryo.
"Fine. Lets not discuss your inability to think rationally. One would most certainly hope that by now you would have realized that what happened to your mother and brother was far beyond your control. And, that there was nothing you could have done to stop it." She squared with Tsukiro. "No...Wait. You held on to that pain. You let it torment you...Damn near destroy you. But, you don't want to talk about that. So, we won't."
She turned on her heels, her back now to Ashimtsu. "Lets talk about abandonment. That is what you did to Kaori Shihoin and your duties to the Shihoin clan, isn't it? You abandoned them for a human woman. Kita Miyamoto, I believe her name was."

Instead of getting angry at her for throwing that in his face, somehow he found guilt running through him. He hung his head, his hair falling in front of his face. His fists clenched.
"Yes. That's exactly what I did. I betrayed her and the entire clan. She gave me everything of herself, and the clan, they trusted me to lead them. And I failed all of them. I shouldn't be worthy to lead them or rule by Kaori's side. But if I were to stay with her even after I fell for Kita, I would have betrayed her even more by doing so. And yet... she still gives me everything. I went to go see her and you know what she told me?" He gave a humorless laugh. "She said she still loves me and that she doesn't blame me. She wasn't angry. She was happy that I found Kita. She has never harbored any ill will against me. She still wants the best for me. And still she's left me wondering, just like with Kita, 'How is it that after all the shit I've done, they still care for me? After all of this, how do they still love me?' It just doesn't make any sense..."

Ryo looked at Tsukiro as he spoke. When he finished, she smiled gentley. "They see something in you, that you obviously fail to see in yourself. Perhaps, it's the same thing that the other Captains see in you."
Tsukiro looked at Ryo, confused.
"It's the same thing that I see in you." continued Ryo. She began to walk back towards her office, Tsukiro following behind. "Tell me, after all that you went through with her...Why abandon Kita?"

"I didn't abandon her! I left so I could better myself and come back to her as someone who could support her and take care of her and treat her like she deserves. She and, we made a promise. I promised that I would be there for her when she came back at last, and she promised that we would work things out when she did. I couldn't stay back then. If I did, I would have only made things worse," he sighed. "The hard part is waiting. That's why I'm doing all I can here to keep from slipping back to that place. I'm almost there; I've almost accomplished what I set out to do, I can taste it. I just have to stay focused on my goals."

Ryo quickly drew Tsukiro's zanpakuto from her obi and hit him square in the chest with it. "You abandoned her. The same way you abandoned the Shihoin Clan." she said calmly, hitting him again as he stumbled backwards and fell onto his back. "And, no amount of good hearted reasoning is going to change that. No amount of training can undo those wrongs. And, no amount of hatred toward any man can steer your heart in the right direction." Ryo looked to Tsukiro with concern. "You want redemption for all you've endured...For all she's endured. I understand what that feels like. But, it is not worth losing yourself."
Ryo extended her hand to Tsukiro and helped him back to his feet. "The Captain Commander is going to want to know why you believe you are qualified to take on the role of a Captain. If he were here with you instead of me, what would you tell him? And, not what you think he wants to hear. But, why you honestly believe you are worthy of the title."
