Tsukiro dusted himself off. "Well, first off, I don't agree with your words. Yes, hatred is a dangerous thing to harbor. But I do not believe that I cannot undo or atone for them. The truth is that I have not been myself for a very long time. What I am trying to accomplish is to return to the person I once was--who I truly am."
He looked up at her. "As for why I should be a captain, it is not for what I have done--the very first captains have done things much worse than I--but for what I can do and what I am able to do. I am done letting the past effect me. I am looking towards the future, and the future I see myself creating for the Gotei Thirteen is a force that Aizen will have to reckon with. Things need to change. They've been far too corrupt for far too long, and if we were supposed to be this immovable force before Aizen began his conquest, then we need to become even more invincible, especially since he's been able to do this to us twice. I want to be the catalyst towards that change that can create us to be that invincible force once more. If things stay the same much longer, there will be nothing left of us to defend against Aizen. That vision and my abilities, along with my persistent efforts to better myself so that I can achieve those goals--I believe that is why I should be captain."

Ryo smiled and handed Tsukiro his zanpakuto. "Why did you take it, anyway?" he asked.
"Because, you getting angry and using your zanpakuto was not an option. Is that a problem?" she answered adjusting her haori.
"You could have just asked for it." he said sharply.
"You would not have given it to me, had I asked."
Tsukiro shook his head. "Probably not."
"So, I didn't bother." Ryo turned and faced Tsukiro, taking a few steps back so she would not have to lift her head to see his face. "You are well on your way, Third Seat Ashimitsu. But, you are still too quick to anger. You spoke to me as if the facts I spoke were attacks on your person. I appreciate that you were able to adjust your temperament. And, while your work has proven you to be an asset, it does not prove you are ready to be Captain. You still have quite a bit to learn. You will make a fine Captain one day, Tsukiro. Just...Not now."

Tsukiro looked down at his zanpakuto, taking in her words. He was so close, but then maybe he was trying to take too many steps at one time. He sighed, then put his zanpakuto back into the back of his sash, at the small of his back. He looked up at her, then bowed deeply.
"Thank you, Captain." He raised back up and turned away. "Tell Kyoraku this: I'll check back in a month."

Ryo nodded as she watched Tsukiro walk away. "You're well on your way, Tsukiro Ashimitsu..."

"Time Moves Forward" (continued):
Ryo sat her desk, chewing on her fountain pen. She ignored the pile of paperwork on her desk as she lost herself in thought. It had been almost a month since she had been tasked with evaluating Tsukiro Ashimitsu. It was a task she did not enjoy. Tsukiro had called into question her character as a Captain, claiming she was not the type of Captain that he wanted to be. What was it that he saw in me?
"It's been about a month, Third Seat Ashimitsu. Let's hope our next meeting goes better."

"Re-Evaluation":
Tsukiro walked through the Squad Nine barracks, searching out the captain's office. He was here for one thing, and one thing only. On the way to Captain Hirabayashi's office, Shuuhei Hisagi spotted him. Instantly knowing what he was there for, he gave him a thumbs up and crossed his fingers. Tsukiro nodded thanks to him and continued on.
When he arrived at her office, he knocked on the door, waiting for her answer.

"You're late, Third Seat Ashimitsu." she called out from behind her desk, not moving to open the door. Tsukiro knocked again, clearly ignoring what she had said. "Come in, Ashimitsu." Tsukiro walked into her office, sliding the door closed beside him.
"How am I late?" asked Tsukiro. "I told you I would be back in a month."
Ryo looked up from her paperwork for a breif moment. "Have a seat."
"No walk this time?" Tsukiro smiled and he took the seat in front of Ryo's desk.
"I have a bit more work to do than expected." she slid her pen behind her ear and leaned back in her chair. "Where shall we start?"

Tsukiro crossed one leg over the other and placed his head in his hand, his elbow resting on the armrest. He thought for a moment, wondering where a good place to start would be. When he had decided, he looked back to her, diverting his eyes from the ceiling.
"I got a good scolding from Lieutenant Kuchiki the other day." He chuckled. "I guess her talking-tos work on everyone, not just Ichigo Kurosaki. None the less, it worked. I spent a few hours cleaning out my family's old house in the Shihoin palace that same day."

Ryo raised an eyebrow. "And, how did that go?" she asked taking the pen from behind her ear. She put the end in her mouth and started to chew on it. "You are clearly in better spirits than you were during our last meeting."

"It was... unexpectedly healing. Yet afterwards I found that I was ashamed of myself. There were so many things I had forgotten over the decades. Important things. Things that could have healed me a lot sooner. I just couldn't face going back in that house until now, when I had no other choice. When I first walked in it was disastrous. It was as if everything in side it, and the house itself, had died along with my mother and brother. I couldn't let it stay that way."

"So, you're heart is lighter then?" she asked, turning to the next page of the rather large stack of papers on her desk. "And, what prompted Lieutenant Kuchiki's little pep talk?"

"I feel lighter, yes." He smiled at the thought of the day Rukia chewed him out. "I suppose Captain Ukitake asked her to, since she lost someone very close to her as well. Whatever the reason, I'm glad he did. I might not have understood what I was missing if he hadn't done what he did."

"So, our talk did nothing for you?" she slid back in her chair until it hit the wall. She stood and streched, yawnig as she did. "Excuse me. I haven't been getting much sleep. Shall we take that walk after all?" She walked over to the door and slid it open. She took her arms out of the sleeves of her haori, leaving it draped over her shoulders. "Are you coming, Third Seat, Ashimitsu?"

Tsukiro smiled a half smirk. "To be honest, not as much." He stood up and followed her out of the office. "So what else do you want to know?"

"What else do you feel like telling me?" Ryo quickened her pace. "You were quite defensive with me, the last time. Should I expect the same thing, this time around? I would rather not have to go through that again. Especially you accused me of being the type of Captain you do not wish to be. I am curious, though?" She stopped and turned to Tsukiro. "What type of Captain would that be?"
